Disney has fired Victoria Alonso, Marvel Studios President of Physical, Post Production, VFX, and Animation, after her 16-year tenure. Alonso’s lawyer, Patty Glaser, was the first to break the silence on her firing, and since then, both sides have offered conflicting explanations for the termination. The Hollywood Reporter alleged that Alonso was fired because of her work on Amazon’s Argentina, 1985, which was in violation of her contract with Disney, as she reportedly did not obtain permission before participating in the publicity and awards campaign. Glaser dismissed the claim and stated that Alonso had Disney’s blessing to work on the project, which centers on human rights and democracy. The attorney noted that Alonso, a gay Latina, was “silenced” and subsequently fired when she refused to do something she believed was reprehensible. The incident in question, which occurred after the press interviews for Doctor Strange 2, Thor 4, Black Panther 2, and Ant-Man 3, involved a disagreement with a Disney executive. Although Kevin Feige did not intervene in the decision to fire Alonso, accusations of a toxic workplace culture at Marvel Studios, particularly with reference to VFX, which Alonso oversaw, have since arisen.

Disney refuted Glaser’s claims and referred to “an indisputable breach of contract and a direct violation of company policy” but did not specify what it was. One factor that has been raised is Alonso’s criticism of then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek for his response to Florida’s divisive “Don’t Say Gay” bill at the 2022 GLAAD Awards. A source of Variety reported that Alonso was no longer allowed to participate in MCU press following her comments at the event, which led to some speculating that Chapek was the executive with whom she had a disagreement. Nonetheless, Alonso continued to be involved in the press for every MCU movie released since then.

The exact events that led to Alonso’s firing remain shrouded in mystery, with contradicting reports from both sides. In a termination case such as this, it is typical to have contrasting stories. Alonso’s attorney promised that her client would disclose more details soon. The mystery surrounding Alonso’s termination is further complicated by the incident that occurred between Alonso and a Disney executive, in which she refused to do something “reprehensible.” With Glaser’s description of Alonso’s firing as a “really poor decision” and promising “serious consequences,” it remains to be seen whether the MCU co-founder is lining up to take legal action.
