After Endgame, a Secret Invasion proved that one Avenger didn’t lose everything.

While Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Secret Invasion, he isn’t the only recognisable character in the new Disney+ series. Despite the fact that Fury is becoming more and more alone, the second episode of the series features Fury’s first-ever MCU encounter with Don Cheadle’s James “Rhodey” Rhodes. Even though their encounter is uncomfortable, it shows Rhodey has improved after the events of Avengers: Endgame. As a former Air Force pilot who first assumed the identity of War Machine after stealing one of Tony Stark’s Iron Man suits to give to the military, Rhodey has long been linked with the US government. Rhodey may have jeopardised his own position when he broke his word and sided with the fugitive Captain America in Avengers: Infinity War, even though he continued to support the government when they urged the Avengers to sign the Sokovia Accords and submit to UN oversight. He is currently in a top position inside the government.

Nick Fury and Rhodey meet in “Promises,” the second episode of Secret Invasion, after Fury makes an effort to stop a Skrull invasion in Moscow. Talos had asked Fury to come back to Earth from the S.A.B.E.R. space station so that he might assist in bringing Gravik’s rogue Skrull group down. As a result, when photos of Fury in Moscow appeared, the strike was attributed to him, and countries throughout the globe believed Fury committed an act of aggression on behalf of the US.

In reaction to the claims that Fury was involved in the assaults, Rhodey had been ordered by the President to address a global committee. Following the committee hearing, Fury approaches Rhodey, and the two meet. This time, Rhodey represents the President by attempting to have Fury fired. Fury loses the meeting, which is bitter, but together with his participation in the committee hearing, this incident demonstrates the significant power Rhodey now holds. In the wake of the Avengers’ eventual victory over Thanos, it is obvious that his disobedience of the Sokovia Accords has long since been forgotten.

The outcomes of Captain America: Civil War put The Avengers in a difficult situation. Most of the team had been classified as criminals because of their disagreement over the Sokovia Accords, and the superhero team had received a lot of criticism as a result of their earlier conflicts. Despite being one of the few who supported the Accords, Rhodey ultimately defied Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross to team up with Captain America in Avengers: Infinity War. Although it had been five years since Thanos’ initial strike, Endgame saw the Avengers save every life that had been wiped by the Mad Titan before defending the whole universe.

They are now back in the government’s good graces thanks to their bravery. The Sokovia Accords have not only been revoked, as Matt Murdock said in She-Hulk, but Rhodey is also currently acting as an envoy for the US Government. While Iron Man and Black Widow’s sacrifices during the battle with Thanos in Endgame were a heartbreaking moment for many Avengers, Rhodey’s ascent through the ranks serves as a reminder that the battle reinforced the Avengers’ reputation as heroes and some of those heroes have already reaped the benefits.
