Actor Joe Locke, who has captured audiences’ hearts, will make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the WandaVision spinoff series Agatha All Along, which revives Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness. The actor was irritated by the criticism that was directed at Locke’s character months before the episode debuted. According to accounts, Locke discussed the criticisms leveled against his character as well as his position as Agatha All Along. Few details are currently available about his character, who goes by the name “Teen.” Alongside Tessa Thompson, Locke is one of the only out actors to portray a queer character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the company has stated that the character is homosexual. Locke said that he hasn’t really thought about how his casting affects representation because it’s still taking him some time to get used to the fact that he’s in the MCU.
Locke said, “I’ve never really thought about it.” It’s one of those things that, if you think about it too much, can become quite stressful. The biggest pinch-me thing, though, is being in a Marvel series… Although the program never downplays his queerness, it doesn’t make him a particularly unique character. It’s only a single aspect of who he is.
The show never shies away from his queerness, but it’s not a defining feature of his character.
Even though Teen’s sexual orientation is only a minor part of who he is, the Agatha All Along trailer’s release sparked a lot of discussion about it online. Other LGBTQ+ members of the community voiced their displeasure with Teen, calling her a “campy stereotype” of a character. Locke talked about how this bothered him and how he views the casting as “authentic,” thus it’s counterintuitive for those who had been calling for Teen to be cast as Agatha all along to start complaining about it. “I thought, ‘Oh, why did Marvel create this cheesy stereotype of a gay man?'” Locke observed. “You can’t ask for authentic casting and then be upset if you have a camp character,” I thought, which really irritated me. I understand well that the Marvel fanbase is not nearly as friendly as the Heartstopper fandom. A significant number of people will undoubtedly detest the character and all I’ve done with it, and I simply have to accept that.
