Nate Moore, a producer at Marvel Studios, comments on rumors that a new actor will play T’Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Black Panther 3. The choice to have T’Challa die in the Black Panther trilogy after Chadwick Boseman’s untimely death in 2020 was one of the most challenging parts of the MCU timeline for Marvel Studios. The discussion over how Marvel Studios would handle that has been stoked by recent rumors that suggested Black Panther 3 might consider recasting T’Challa. In a recent interview with ComicBook, Nate Moore, the producer of Captain America: Brave New World and Black Panther 3, was questioned if the rumors that Marvel Studios is recasting T’Challa for the next sequel are true. Moore gave the following information, confirming that the allegations about Black Panther 3’s recasting are untrue:
The truth is, there’s no truth to those rumors. Never say never to anything, we haven’t really had a lot of creative conversations with Ryan Coogler yet, because he’s finishing his film Sinners, which comes out this year. We’ll get into it later this year, but everything you read online is not true, if for no other reason than we just haven’t started working on it.
There has always been disagreement about whether the MCU should have replaced T’Challa because Boseman’s character dies at the beginning of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. However, by introducing a version into Earth-616, the notion of recasting T’Challa in Black Panther 3 might mesh with the multiverse concept. Black Panther 3 may succeed since the MCU has previously demonstrated that heroes like Spider-Man can have several actors portraying variations from different realities. Moore’s remarks, however, suggest that even with The Multiverse Saga at their disposal, the question is more whether or not they should do it in Black Panther 3 than how to accomplish it. Since Shuri just assumed the role in the latter part of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, it’s important to keep in mind that she has hardly ever been the MCU’s Black Panther. Given how Black Panther: Wakanda Forever served as a global means of mourning Boseman’s death, it would be detrimental to Shuri’s character if a potential Black Panther 3 already chose to introduce a new T’Challa. Given that Black Panther 3 is still in its early stages of development and has not yet received an official announcement, Moore’s remarks make perfect sense. The question of whether a fresh actor will be chosen to play T’Challa is still much too early. Following The Multiverse Saga and the rumored soft reboot in Avengers: Secret Wars, it could be simpler to create a new reality in which a different actor plays T’Challa. The world will have to wait until 2025 to find out whether there will be any more official Black Panther 3 updates, and if so, whether a new T’Challa will be included in the MCU.
