Anson Mount of Marvel confirms Black Bolt’s return

Anson Mount, who plays Black Bolt, recently addressed if Marvel Studios has approached him about bringing the monarch of Attilan back for future Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Mount provided a cryptic statement in an interview on a possible comeback to the MCU as Black Bolt. “If the answer was yes, I wouldn’t be able to tell you – but the answer is no, so I can,” he explained. Mount, on the other hand, claimed that he has “had some informal conversations with the powers [at] Marvel” concerning Black Bolt’s comeback, but that it would not happen until after “their current phase.” “I don’t know, we’ll see,” the actor continued. I’d want to climb back into the cowl and do it all over again. “As a character, I adore Black Bolt.”

Mount originally featured as Black Bolt in the ABC drama series Inhumans, which was cancelled in May 2018 after only one season owing to low ratings. While many fans anticipated Mount’s Black Bolt to make his first and only appearance in Inhumans, the actor made a surprise cameo as the Earth-838 form of the character in the 2022 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He featured in the film as a member of the Earth-838 Illuminati, who were all slain by the Scarlet Witch during her rampage through the Baxter Foundation headquarters, dressed in a comic-accurate outfit.

Marvel Studios is currently halfway through the Multiverse Saga, which includes MCU Phases 4, 5, and 6. At this point, Marvel has revealed no projects that will involve Inhumans, so fans are unlikely to see Black Bolt or other members of the Inhuman Royal Family in the MCU anytime soon. Furthermore, in the MCU, the studio modified Ms. Marvel’s genetic heritage, making her the MCU’s first mutant rather than an Inhuman, as she is in the comics, and eliminating Inhumans from Earth-616. This shift has prompted some fans to speculate that Marvel may still bring significant Inhuman figures in the MCU, albeit as mutants. Mount is now starring in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as Captain Christopher Pike, a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery that follows the crew of the spaceship USS Enterprise a decade before Star Trek: The Original Series. The 10-episode first season of the sitcom launched on Paramount+ in 2022. The second season started in June 2023 and is set to end in August. A third season is now in the works but has been put on hold owing to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.
