Author of Spider-Verse responds brutally to NBA’s AI Imitation project

The NBA’s cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology, which aims to give spectators the impression that they are seeing an animated movie, has drawn criticism from Chris Miller, one of the co-writers behind the Spider-Verse franchise. Adam Silver, the commissioner of the NBA, recently revealed a demonstration of the AI system within the NBA app using the iconic artwork from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Chris Miller took aim at the NBA for stealing the animated film’s look without getting permission or even attempting to get in contact with Sony or its creatives. In his assessment of the AI’s visual aesthetic, Miller said it was unmatched by the inventive visuals in the Spider-Verse movies.

“I love that people are excited about Spider-Verse, and I’m a big NBA fan,” Miller said, “but this janky-ass AI looks nothing like the hand-crafted innovative artistry of the films.” For the fact, they never contacted us regarding “scraping” the style of the movies, as far as I know. NBA player Victor Wembanyama and Adam Silver introduced the AI system, with Silver saying, “I often think of the NBA as a great movie.” Show me the Pacers game, NB-AI, like it’s a Spider-Man film. Into the Spider-Verse (2018) popularised the unique graphical style that is now linked with the Spider-Verse franchise and can be seen in subsequent movies like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. For the movie, Lord and Miller had a very different vision: they combined computer animation with classic hand-drawn comic book methods, which were influenced by Miles Morales co-creator Sara Pichelli. Sony Pictures Animation put together the largest staff the company has ever hired for a feature film—up to 140 animators—to realise their vision.

Two animators had to labour for over a year to create just 10 seconds of video that corresponded with the producers’ idea. In order to create the film’s visual style, the filmmakers first worked closely with one animator; but, as production went on, the crew grew to sixty animators. Realising that more manpower was required, the team continued to expand, finally reaching 142 animators by August 2018 and hitting a record-breaking 177 animators, which set a record for Sony Pictures Imageworks. Several comic book techniques, such as line work, painting, and dots, were added to the CGI animation to give it a handcrafted aspect that was referred to as “a living painting.” In order to turn each produced frame from the CGI animators into a dynamic comic panel, artists layered 2D elements over them. This inventive animation method was praised by Lord as “totally revolutionary.”
