Marvel Comics has recently introduced a new character in its Avengers: Twilight storyline, and it is none other than Iron Man and Wasp’s son, James Stark. However, unlike his parents, James has taken up the role of a villain in the dystopian future depicted in the storyline. The new Iron Man suit that James uses is powered by Stark Technology and is provided to the US government from a facility called The Raft. James is portrayed as a spoiled and sleazy character who blames the old Captain America and old Iron Man for a national tragedy known as “H-Day” that killed hundreds, including Spider-Man and the Hulk.
The Avengers: Twilight storyline presents a dystopian future where the age of heroes is over. The storyline is set decades after “H-Day,” which was a national tragedy that had leveled Boston and killed several superheroes. The storyline portrays a futuristic New York City as an authoritarian police state where the Watcher Act has outlawed camera phones as a criminal offense. The new Iron Man, James Stark, is portrayed as a direct line to the president and the F.B.I. and is responsible for providing the US government with armored soldiers and weapons.
The introduction of James Stark as a villain in the Marvel Comics’ universe has opened up new possibilities for the Avengers’ storyline. It is interesting to see a character born to two original Avengers, Tony Stark/Iron Man and Janet van Dyne/Wasp, take up the role of a villain. The Avengers: Twilight storyline also portrays an aged Luke Cage leading a resistance of hooded and poncho-clad dissenters in masks called the Defenders. The Defenders are fighting against the fascism that has taken over the country, and they are calling on Captain America to be their symbol in their fight from the shadows. The Avengers: Twilight storyline is a gripping tale that has left fans eagerly anticipating the next installment of the Avengers’ storyline.
