Beau DeMayo accuses Marvel and Disney of ‘Toxic’ work culture, cites discrimination and legal battle

Beau DeMayo, the former showrunner of “X-Men ’97,” has taken a bold stance against Marvel and Disney, alleging “toxic” and “near criminal working conditions” at the studio. DeMayo, who was fired from his position just before the series’ debut, claims that the real reason for his dismissal was not the misconduct allegations levied against him, but rather his identity as a gay Black man and his refusal to conform to certain narratives that he found inappropriate.

In a recent statement, DeMayo vehemently denied the allegations of misconduct, calling them part of a smear campaign designed to discredit him and cover up the true reasons for his firing. He highlighted the “egregious prejudicial misconduct” that he believes extends from select crew members to the top management at Marvel Studios. DeMayo also pointed out that his dismissal came after he expressed concerns about feeling unsafe at the studio as a gay Black man, following a conversation with company HR.

DeMayo’s legal team, led by attorney Bryan Freedman, has filed a complaint in LA Superior Court seeking to have an allegedly “illegal non-disparagement provision” removed from DeMayo’s exit package documents. This provision was intended to prevent DeMayo from speaking negatively about Marvel or Disney, which Freedman argues is a violation of DeMayo’s statutory rights under California law. Freedman stated that Marvel knowingly included this provision to muzzle DeMayo and prevent him from revealing the truth about his dismissal and the working conditions at the studio.

DeMayo has been vocal about his experiences on social media, using platforms like OnlyFans to share his side of the story. He has detailed the discriminatory and harassing conduct he endured during his tenure at Marvel, which he believes was a significant factor in his forced ouster. DeMayo’s case is not just about his personal experience but also about challenging the systemic issues within the entertainment industry, particularly regarding LGBTQ+ representation and workplace safety.
