You may now watch the first 10 minutes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse without charge. In honour of the film’s impending digital release, IGN exclusively released a portion of the Gwen Stacy prologue chapter from Across the Spider-Verse. This chapter briefly summarises the history of Miles Morales before focusing on Gwen’s daily life on Earth-65. This covers her sad Spider-Woman past, her tumultuous relationship with her police captain father George Stacy, and her pivotal run-ins with an extraterrestrial Vulture from the Renaissance era and fellow Spider-Man Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac) in the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

In addition to being released digitally, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be sold on 4K UHD and Blu-ray on September 5 of next year. The Spider-Verse sequel, which had a $100 million budget and received unanimous acclaim upon release, was a movie office hit last month, grossing more than $600 million worldwide. The CBR review, however, singled out Gwen’s prologue segment, noting that “The directors and writers take time to flesh out Gwen’s story and establish the new stakes and animation techniques in this 10-15 minute opening.” It also commended the uniqueness of each planet and hero. Although Across the Spider-Verse is a visual marvel with action sequences that embody the joyous spirit of animation and comics, it is their patience that makes the film strong and gives it meaning beyond the spectacle.

Miles, Gwen, and Miguel, who originally appeared in the post-credits of Into the Spider-Verse, were joined by a large number of Spider-people who make up the elite Spider-Spciety in Across the Spider-Verse. These featured the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon to a Lego world incarnation, as well as Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman (Issa Rae), Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), and Spider-Man India (Karan Soni). The movie’s animation demonstrated its adaptability by creating six distinct visual idioms for each multiverse realm the protagonists live or visit.

Despite Across the Spider-Verse’s popularity with critics and audiences, there has been some debate. After the film’s debut, a report lambasted its toxic working environment and the producers, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, to the point where, according to one animator, “over 100 people left the project because they couldn’t take it anymore.” Additionally, even though its cliffhanger hinted that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse would be released the following year, Sony has decided to pull the sequel from their 2024 schedule because to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, a Miles-focused Spider-Verse short, debuted at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival not long after the movie’s release.
