When Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse eventually comes out, it seems like you can anticipate an emotional conclusion to Sony’s Spider-Verse films. Star Bryan Tyree Henry, who portrays Jeff, the father of Miles Morales in the animated Marvel films, says so. Given the amount of effort needed to complete the first two installments of the critically acclaimed trilogy, the company confidently predicted that Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released in March 2024. Unfortunately, insider claims that suggested a grind culture and subpar work habits that reflected negatively on the studio led to the removal of the release date for one of the most anticipated forthcoming Marvel films. In an interview with Variety, Henry played up hints that his schedule was the reason behind the postponement of Beyond the Spider-Verse, to which his co-star from The Fire Inside playfully responded, “The trilogy-ender will be worth the wait.”
HENRY: In all due time. We have to conclude it. It has to be concluded. Can you imagine if we were like, “That’s it. He’s in a portal and that’s it.”
DESTINY: Is it your fault, Brian, because you’re too booked and busy? Is it because of your schedule?
HENRY: First of all, that’s loaded. And yes, the answer is yes. No, look, it takes time, but we got to make you wait a little bit. You know what I mean? But it’s coming. It’s coming. There’s not going to be a dry eye in the house. I’ll tell you that. Good luck. It’s not going to wrap up in a nice little bow what things do.
That can’t be good news for Jeff Morales, can it? There is currently no definite release date for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, but according to Deadline, Sony intends to release it in 2025. Henry’s remarks on his own schedule causing Beyond the Spider-Verse to be delayed are probably just a joke between co-stars. Co-star Jharrel Jerome, who portrayed Miles G. Morales, said in early December that he had not yet recorded any of his lines and that he had just a limited amount of knowledge about the film, but he also hinted at major plot twists:
You know, that’s such a close-knit ship that I really can’t say much more. I’m not even very knowledgeable. I’m just as ignorant as you are, but I can’t wait to rejoin and find out what they’re thinking, particularly about my character. That twist on the last one was really fierce.
It takes awhile to animate anything this large. Producer Chris Miller stated in September 2024 that “the reels are coming along nicely” following internet rumors that the film had been shelved. A Sony insider informed Variety that the delay was “due to union’s work stoppage orders”—that is, “the voice cast cannot complete dialogue recording in time for the spring opening”—when the news first broke in July 2023. No release date has been announced, even though it was promised to happen soon. The conclusion of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, in which the multiverse-hopping villain The Spot (Jason Schwartzman) vowed to kill Miles’ father Jeff and The Spider Society tragically revealed to Miles that his father’s death was a canon event that had to occur, is in line with Henry’s promise of a heart-stopping tale. The narrative of Beyond the Spider-Verse is likely to heavily rely on Miles’ connection with his father and the possibility of his death.
The limit of fated existence and the strength of self-determination are the overarching themes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and, in fact, both Spider-Verse films to date. After refusing to miss the fight in the first film, Miles Morales takes charge of his own destiny and rebels against what he perceives to be the Spider Society’s oppressive hold on sanctioned canon events. In this version, they essentially serve as the TVA, and Miles rebels in the same manner as Loki and Sylvie do in response to the TVA and He Who Remains in Loki. Miles will probably have to accept the fact that Jeff must perish for his whole universe to exist since, regrettably, canon events in the Spider-Verse seem true. What Bryan Tyree Henry just said about “no dry eyes” will undoubtedly be fulfilled by that. Essentially, superheroes have experienced tragedy both on and off screen throughout the history of capes and cowls, and Miles’ adventure in Beyond the Spider-Verse most likely has to conclude on a somber note. Ultimately, the wait will be fully justified if the final product is as good as the previous two.
