Black Widow’s sequel in 2024 is being revised at Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios has been making waves in the entertainment industry since its inception in 2008, producing some of the most successful films in recent memory. However, even the biggest studios in Hollywood are not immune to production challenges, and the latest news regarding the upcoming Black Widow sequel proves just that.

A recent rumor suggests that Marvel is currently reworking its upcoming Black Widow sequel, which is set to be released in 2024. The movie, called Thunderbolts, features a number of MCU antiheroes on a single team. However, several of its main stars are already from the same film, including Black Widow’s Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Antonia Dreykov’s Olga Kurylenko/Taskmaster, who are all confirmed for Thunderbolts.

Marvel Studios Director of Visual Development Andy Park has even described the movie as “a Black Widow sequel.” However, recent rumors suggest that the Phase 5 ensemble is currently being retooled.

The reason behind the reworking of Thunderbolts is reportedly due to a problem that was similar to what was faced by Warner Bros. when they released Suicide Squad in 2016. The issue was that the movie was too focused on the Black Widow characters who are going to be in Thunderbolts, and it wasn’t an equal enough balance for the team. It just very much emphasized the characters that audiences already knew.

Marvel Studios hired Lee Sung Jin to rewrite the Thunderbolts, replacing its previous writer, Black Widow’s Eric Pearson. Jin is known as the creator and showrunner for Netflix’s Beef. The move suggested that the studio wasn’t happy with Thunderbolts, which is expected to begin filming soon.

While the information from the industry scooper Jeff Sneider is only a rumor, it’s not hard to believe that the initial script was too Black Widow-centric. Having Pugh and Harbour reunited but working alongside Antonia Dreykov’s Taskmaster, as well as yet another Black Widow alum, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Val, could easily be a film by itself. However, Thunderbolts needs to be more than a Black Widow spin-off, and Marvel Studios certainly needs to avoid what happened with Suicide Squad in 2016, especially since their similar premises make comparisons unavoidable.

Marvel Studios has had a lot of success in creating a cohesive cinematic universe, but the reworking of Thunderbolts proves that they are not infallible. Marvel’s ability to pivot and course-correct to make their movies better is what sets them apart from other studios. Only time will tell if Lee Sung Jin is able to bring balance to the Thunderbolts cast and its script, but if all stays on schedule, fans should be seeing and hearing more once production gets underway. Thunderbolts arrives in theaters on July 26, 2024.
