Box office forecasts for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 revealed for the first time

Spread MCU News

As one of the most popular Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchises, Guardians of the Galaxy is highly anticipated by fans worldwide. However, the latest projections for the upcoming Vol. 3 movie may be a cause for concern among fans and investors alike.

According to Box Office Pro, the movie is expected to earn between $120 million to $155 million in its opening weekend domestically, and $288 million to $403 million by the end of its theatrical run. While these numbers may seem impressive to some, they are significantly lower than the box office earnings of its predecessors. The first Guardians movie made $94.3 million domestically in its opening weekend, and $333.7 million by the end of its run, while the second installment earned $146.5 million in its opening weekend and $389 million in total.

Moreover, the projections for Vol. 3 are notably lower than those for recent MCU movies. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever earned $181 million, Spider-Man: No Way Home earned $260 million, and Thor: Love and Thunder earned $144 million in their respective opening weekends. Although it’s important to note that these movies have larger fan bases and more established characters, it still raises concerns about the future of the Guardians franchise.

One factor that may have contributed to these lower projections is the recent lackluster performance of MCU movies. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania received negative reviews from fans and critics alike, and had a disappointing box office earnings of $622.6 million. The lukewarm reception to this movie may have created some hesitation among fans for future MCU releases.

Another key factor that could influence the performance of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is critical reception. Fans have been eagerly waiting for the return of James Gunn to the franchise, and this movie marks his final installment with the current iteration of the team. If the movie is met with positive reviews from critics and fans, it may have a chance of exceeding box office projections. However, if it falls flat, it could continue the trend of lackluster performance in the MCU.

It’s worth noting that superhero movies in general have faced challenges at the box office lately. Shazam! Fury of the Gods, a recent DCEU movie, had a rocky debut, earning only $3.4 million on its opening night. Birds of Prey held the spot at the bottom of the list since 2020 with $4 million. Despite these numbers, Fury of the Gods has brought in $56 million domestically and $123 million worldwide since its release on March 17.

All in all, the success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remains to be seen. The movie hits theaters on May 5, and fans will have to wait and see if it lives up to their expectations. While the projections may not be as high as some may have hoped, a positive critical reception and enthusiastic fan base could still propel the movie to success.
