From its first weekend haul to its global domestic and international results, Venom: The Last Dance will continue to be the focus of box office reporting. Surprisingly, Venom 3’s climactic conclusion foreshadows a future for one of its new characters while also marking the conclusion of the trilogy based in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Even although the titular Lethal Protector is no longer bound to Eddie Brock, the franchise will still be impacted by the wicked Knull’s lingering grudge, as was hinted to in the post-credit sequence of Venom 3. Even though Venom’s future is unknown, if The Last Dance does well at the movie office, the narrative of Venom 4 may be approved. Since Morbius and Madame Web have failed in the past, both economically and in terms of their critical standing inside the Sony Spider-Man Universe, Sony cannot afford to be choosy. Sony’s only recent superhero film success is the Venom franchise, which begs the issue of whether Venom: The Last Dance has carried on this tradition or failed to live up to expectations at the very end.
At the end of its first weekend, Venom: The Last Dance’s box office receipts appeared to be a little encouraging overall. On a budget of about $120 million, the movie was made. Given that the majority of superhero films in the current genre are made with budgets that soar to and past $200 million, this production cost is somewhat of a rarity. Venom: The Last Dance, on the other hand, was clearly a more cost-cutting production, which makes its overall box office receipts to date all the more remarkable.
Sony will hope Venom: The Last Dance can defy the norm and hold its place as a box office hit for a month or longer…
Venom: The Last Dance has made a solid $475,372,379 as of December 16, 2024. Given that Venom: The Last Dance is almost finished with a couple million dollars, give or take, left in its theatrical run, this is a rather respectable box office haul. Given the smaller budget in comparison to other superhero franchises, this is a rather respectable success, marking another victory for the Venom franchise. However, Sony may be concerned about the decreasing returns of each sequel.
They provide somewhat of a contradiction with regard to Venom: The Last Dance’s first weekend box office receipts. Venom: The Last Dance did not have a successful domestic debut. Venom 3 only made about $51 million in the US and Canada, far less than the $61 million opening take that was anticipated. The overseas market is far more hopeful in terms of Venom: The Last Dance’s opening weekend gross, even though this figure is probably disappointing to many at Sony Pictures. Venom 3’s first weekend box office receipts abroad nearly quadrupled its local total. Outside of North America, the movie earned a very respectable $124 million, bringing its total opening weekend earnings to $175 million globally. Sony is clearly pleased with these figures given its relatively low expenditure of $120 million. In addition, Venom: The Last Dance had the best opening weekend earnings for a superhero film since 2019 and the highest Hollywood opening of 2024, with $46 million in China alone.
As mentioned, Sony’s most successful superhero property at the moment is without a doubt the Venom franchise. The economic success of Venom 3 is similar to that of its two predecessors, which comfortably surpass Madame Web and Morbius. The Venom trilogy is the sole successful live-action series in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, while Kraven the Hunter has had a poor start at the box office. Of course, Venom: The Last Dance’s $475 million total is little compared to Venom’s $856 million global revenue. The dip from the second to the third movie wasn’t too severe, though, since it is somewhat closer to Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s $501 million box office receipt. It maintains the pattern of Venom films earning less than their predecessors, suggesting that the franchise may be nearing its conclusion. Venom: The Last seems to be a huge success when compared to earlier Sony Spider-Man Universe films. At a pitiful $167 million and $100 million worldwide, respectively, Morbius and Madame Web are among the worst superhero film office failures ever. In addition to making money at the film office, Venom: The Last Dance demonstrates how much more appealing Venom is as a character than Sony’s previous Spider-Man Universe ventures.
