The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is known for its complex storytelling and interconnected characters. The recent release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has introduced audiences to the next big villain of the MCU, Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors. However, Kang’s presence in the MCU was first hinted at in the season finale of Loki, where Majors played a variant of the character named He Who Remains. In the post-credits scene of Quantumania, Majors is seen playing thousands of different variants of Kang, and fans are eagerly trying to make sense of it all.
In the comics, this group of Kangs is known as the Council of Kangs. The first variant of Kang that fans are introduced to is the Pharaoh himself. According to the comics, in the 30th century, a board scientist by the name of Nathaniel Richards constructed a time machine that looked like a sphinx. He then traveled back in time to ancient Egypt, where he used his genius and advanced technologies to perform his first conquest. This story unfolded in the pages of 1961’s Fantastic Four #19. At the time, the character of Kang did not exist, but the story was later Retconned to have dramatized a variant of Kang the Conqueror.
Another Kang variant that fans believe they may have met in the post-credits scene is the Scarlet Centurion. In the comics, this variant of Kang is inspired by a encounter with Dr. Doom, which leads him to take on a new persona. However, this Kang variant in the post-credits scene is not red and is more of a purply blue collar, which has led to speculation that it might actually be an adult version of Iron Lad, a Kang variant who initially went down the path of being a hero before succumbing to his destiny and becoming Kang the Conqueror. Fans believe that this variant will likely be referred to as the Centurion.
The Pope variant of Kang is also present in the post-credits scene. This variant is known as Immortus in the comics and resides in a place that exists outside of time, a pocket reality known as temporal limbo. He successfully tricks the Council of Kangs into eliminating all other Kang variants from the multiverse, ensuring that he becomes the only Kang variant in existence.
However, what has really captured fans’ attention is the shot of the multiverse in the post-credits scene. This is a concept that was first introduced in the season finale of Loki, where the concept of the sacred timeline was also introduced. The sacred timeline is a series of timelines or universes threaded together like strands of a rope. These timelines run parallel to one another in a circular motion, and they happen again and again. In the post-credits scene of Quantumania, fans see the multiverse branching off from the sacred timeline, indicating that the events of the film have shattered the timeline and created a multiverse.
As fans eagerly anticipate the next phase of the MCU, they are left wondering how all of these different Kang variants will fit into the upcoming films. Will we see a showdown between the Council of Kangs and the Avengers in the rumored Avengers Secret Wars? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain: the MCU is not done with Kang the Conqueror just yet.
