In Marvel’s Secret Invasion, Nick Fury is confronted with a Skrull attempt to seize control of Earth. While Fury previously formed an alliance with the Skrulls who live and hide on Earth, the invasion campaign is led by the renegade Skrull Gravik, who has lost trust in Fury and Carol Danvers’ pledge to give the Skrulls a new home. Gravik’s armies have exploited their shape-shifting talents to replace humans in positions of authority all around the planet. This has allowed them to smoothly infiltrate Earth’s governments, leaving Nick Fury unsure of who of his ostensible allies he can rely on. Secret Invasion’s first episode introduced Olivia Colman’s Sonya Falsworth to the MCU. Falsworth is an MI6 special agent and an old acquaintance of Nick Fury’s, having worked on missions with him in the past. Secret Invasion has dragged her into the fight against the Skrulls, indicating that she is aware of Gravik’s invasion operation and is sceptical that Fury still has what it takes to confront this battle. However, much of Sonya’s genuine intentions and motivations remain unknown, raising the issue of whether she can be trusted.

Given Sonya Falsworth’s prominent position at MI6 and her comprehensive knowledge of the Skrull invasion, it’s logical to assume she’s one of Gravik’s Skrulls put in strategically crucial places throughout the world. However, in Secret Invasion’s second episode, “Promises,” Falsworth tortured one of Gravik’s enforcers for information before fleeing before Gravik came with weapons blazing. At the very least, it appears that Falsworth is not in cahoots with Gravik. This horrific interrogation sequence implies that Falsworth is the human she appears to be, using MI6 intelligence to oppose the Skrulls’ clandestine invasion with her own clandestine means. However, as Fury points out, her approach is unwavering and heartless. In fact, she appears indifferent about Gravik’s broader dangers, dedicating more time and effort on getting to the core of Gravik’s enterprise than thwarting his assaults. It’s plausible that she’s seeking to present herself as the hero who confronts the Skrull danger in order to advance her career inside MI6.

While it’s possible that Sonya Falsworth is exactly what she appears to be — a steely, focused MI6 officer hesitant to risk placing her mission in the hands of Nick Fury — the potential that she is a Skrull remains. While she tortured one of Gravik’s spies, she may be one of the few Skrulls on Earth who have retained their resistance to Gravik’s renegade group, which has now ascended to power. However, if true, the fact that she has kept her identity hidden from Fury and Talos shows that her motivations do not coincide with theirs. Falsworth being a Skrull would explain her knowledge of Skrull anatomy when torturing Brogan, Gravik’s soldier. This might also explain her work. Even before Gravik’s invasion preparations took shape, many of the Skrulls on Earth were replacing people in positions of authority. Falsworth may also believe in exploiting this tactical advantage to remove Earth from mankind and give it to the Skrulls, but he does not agree with Gravik’s warmongering strategy, preferring a quieter infiltration from within Earth’s current security and political structures. In either case, Falsworth is not a guy to be taken at face value, and Fury should not rely on him to preserve the planet from invasion.
