Cassie’s journey: A tribute to Madame Web film’s comic creators

Spread MCU News

Madame Web, in its effort to bring attention to Marvel Comics heroines who have previously been overlooked onscreen, includes Easter eggs that pay tribute to the character’s original comic creators. In one scene, as Cassie wrestles with her newfound powers, she has a vision of performing CPR on her co-worker named O’Neil. Despite warning him not to get involved in a fatal collision, O’Neil tragically passes away, leading Cassie into a state of depression. While his first name is not mentioned in the film, O’Neil’s last name serves as a clear reference to Dennis O’Neil, the writer and co-creator of Madame Web.

Another Easter egg can be found later in the film when Cassie and her companions try to escape from Ezekiel Sims by leading him into a fireworks factory. The crates of explosives in the factory bear the “Romita” brand, a nod to artist John Romita Jr., who co-created Madame Web alongside O’Neil. This subtle tribute to the original creators serves as a homage to their pivotal role in bringing the character to life in The Amazing Spider-Man #210 from 1980, where Madame Web forms an unexpected alliance with Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
