A posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame will be dedicated to the late actor and Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman. Boseman is one of eight celebrated actors earning a star for their services to motion films, according to a statement on the Walk of Fame’s official website. Boseman will join the likes of Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige, Wonder Woman actresses Chris Pine and Gal Gadot, and Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh in earning a star. The Walk of Fame Selection Panel of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce selected the honorees earlier this month from among hundreds of nominees.
During the height of his career, Boseman was one of Hollywood’s most lauded success stories after establishing himself as T’Challa/Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He made his film debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War as Wakanda’s chief guardian and later made appearances in the Avengers films Infinity War and Endgame. Boseman’s biggest claim to fame was playing the title role in Black Panther in 2018, which went on to become one of the MCU’s most profitable movies ever, grossing $1.344 billion worldwide and winning three Academy Awards.
After a protracted and closely-guarded struggle with colon cancer, Boseman passed suddenly in August 2020, before Wakanda Forever, the much awaited Black Panther sequel, could start shooting. T’Challa’s off-screen passing at the beginning of Wakanda Forever from an unknown disease served as a tribute to Boseman. In addition, there were flashbacks to the first film and unreleased Boseman footage in the Black Panther sequel. A successful sequel, Wakanda Forever made $859.2 million and garnered an Oscar.
Boseman has been in films including the Jackie Robinson biography, 42, Da 5 Bloods, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in addition to his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which also featured his Emmy Award-winning performance in Disney+’s What If…? For his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Boseman was posthumously nominated for his first Academy Award in the Best Actor category. He had already won a Golden Globe for the same role. In order to carry on the actor’s legacy and promote the intellectual, spiritual, and creative development of those in the African diaspora, the Chadwick Boseman Foundation for the Arts was established in 2022. In Wakanda Forever, T’Challa played by Chadwick Boseman’s sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) took over as the Black Panther. Wright has talked about the emotional toll that Boseman’s death had on her and everyone else working on the sequel to Wakanda Forever. Wright also said that a Black Panther 3 was being worked on, however she later took back her remarks.
