Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays Baron Mordo in Doctor Strange, talks about his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Chiwetel Ejiofor is preparing to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Doctor Strange actor recently spoke about what the future holds for his character, Karl Mordo, in the MCU. Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Ejiofor discussed the Doctor Strange post-credits scene, in which Mordo took on a villainous role and hunted sorcerers, and whether Marvel planned to revisit that unresolved storyline in a future MCU film. “Sure, there was sort of broad – like with any of these things that develop over time – ideas which always felt like they would be subject to manipulation, change, or reinvention,” the actor said of Marvel Studios’ original ambitions for Karl Mordo. “There’s still room for other pieces of it to come to fulfillment, and, to be honest, there were whole new areas for Mordo that didn’t exist in the discourse at the time, but they still had all this capacity and promise. The vision is unquestionably important, which I find fascinating. An individual or team’s vision for the tales as they progress. I’m thrilled about it.”

Despite the fact that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ignored the 2016 film’s post-credits tease, Ejiofor reprised his role as the Earth-838 form of Karl Mordo, a member of the Illuminati. The actor was almost cast as the major Karl Mordo in the film’s opening sequence, which would have seen him slain by the Scarlet Witch, but the role was dropped. While Marvel Studios appears to have forgotten about the primary character, Karlo Mordo, Ejiofor has not, stating that the MCU is “a world that still holds a lot of excitement for me.” On Mordo’s MCU future, he said, “I think there’s a beautiful open door there, and just finding the moment to tell those stories where it’s genuinely the most exciting part of that story you can tell and shine a light on.” “I believe it has the potential to be truly remarkable.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness concluded with Benedict Cumberbatch’s eponymous hero traveling to the Dark Dimension alongside Clea to repair an invasion he committed. At this moment, it is uncertain whether Marvel intends to continue this mid-credits scene in a third Doctor Strange film or one of the next Avengers sequels. Doctor Strange 3 is said to be both in production at Marvel and on the studio’s release calendar. However, as Marvel Studios has yet to openly confirm any Doctor Strange sequel, this report should be taken with a grain of salt for the time being. In June 2024, Cumberbatch revealed that he will return as Doctor Strange in Avengers: Doomsday, saying, “I’m very much looking forward to Avengers next year, which is cooking up a storm.” The plot specifics for the highly anticipated sequel are presently unknown, but Marvel Studios has announced that Doctor Doom will serve as the major adversary in both Doomsday and its immediate sequel, Secret Wars. Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom, his second role in the MCU following Tony Stark/Iron Man.
