Deadpool & Wolverine, with its high stakes and distinction as the first MCU film to be classified R, seems set to be a game-changer for the movie franchise. The team-up movie has raised eyebrows as a possible sign that the MCU could become a more edgy product, but Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, says he doesn’t want to “overdo it” despite the change in tone. In an interview, Feige talked about the future of the MCU and if the boundary-pushing work of Deadpool and Wolverine portends a more raucous cinematic world. Feige mentioned that the MCU had previously taken a “edgy” turn and suggested that any shift toward a more responsible course wouldn’t be made only for show. He did, however, want the next big movie to be faithful to the Deadpool series. “I believe we’ve been edgy in the past, but our wide range of genres and tones is what I love most about us. We wanted to stay loyal to what Ryan had developed over the prior two of films, and we weren’t going to ruin that. I think it gets a lot of attention that this is our first R-rated movie, but it is the third R-rated Deadpool movie,” he remarked.

Feige emphasized that Deadpool & Wolverine’s adult tone does not overpower the film’s primary component, which is emotion. The head of Marvel said that if viewers get past the profanity and raunchiness, the impending blockbuster is the most “wholesome” R-rated movie ever made. “Yes, it’s an R-rated movie with some profanity and blood, but as you can see from the trailer and the press tour thus far, the movie is really touching. It is, as I continue to say, the most wholesome R-rated movie that anyone will ever watch. It truly is a celebration of family, friendship, and newly discovered family, according to Feige. It’s going to be about how emotional the film is, regardless of how much R-rated raunchiness attracts attention. I don’t want to overdo it.” He said, “That’s what I’m really excited about, once people get past the ‘F’ words and the R-rating, to see how sweet it is.”

Deadpool & Wolverine is the MCU’s first R-rated feature picture, but it’s not the first time the adult genre has been attempted in the cinematic universe. Lead actor Chris Pratt dropped an uncensored F-bomb in last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and the MCU debuted its first R-rated TV series in January, Marvel Spotlight’s Alaqua Cox-led Echo. There are other projects that will get a TV-MA classification, such Daredevil: Born Again. In Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds as Logan and the “Merc With a Mouth,” respectively, the two anti-heroes team up for a mission that has the potential to permanently reshape the MCU and the Multiverse. Feige has high hopes for Deadpool & Wolverine and hinted at a significant X-Men surprise once the Phase Five blockbuster hits theaters, despite the fact that he will be the target of jokes during the film. Deadpool & Wolverine, which is helmed by Shawn Levy, also stars Emma Corrin, Jennifer Garner, Morena Baccarin, Karan Soni, Stefan Kapičić, and a number of anticipated celebrity appearances. The movie is anticipated to have a record-breaking first weekend, with a possible domestic total of up to $165 million.
