With each passing day, Deadpool & Wolverine is breaking box office records. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues its billion-dollar theatrical run, the first R-rated picture in the franchise helps the MCU break new ground. According to sources, this past weekend saw Deadpool and Wolverine assure that the MCU topped $31 billion at the global box office, with $12.4 billion coming from domestic theaters. Since its launch in 2008, the MCU has made $31.1 billion in box office revenue from its 34 films globally, solidifying its position as the highest-grossing film series ever. Deadpool & Wolverine made $1.305 billion worldwide after its July 26 theatrical debut, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 2024 (after Inside Out 2). The Phase Five smash is currently ranked eighth, not much behind Black Panther, which came in seventh position with $1.33 billion, making it one of the top 10 most commercially successful MCU feature-length films ever. Beyond 2019’s Joker, the team-up picture has become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
Deadpool & Wolverine, directed by Shawn Levy, created history for the MCU by becoming the first R-rated big-screen entry and the starting point of the so-called “mutant era.” Several well-known characters from the 20th Century Fox X-Men film franchise had their cinematic debuts in the picture, including Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, Tyler Mane’s Sabretooth, Aaron Stanford’s Pyro, and Dafne Keen’s X-23. In addition, Deadpool & Wolverine has a number of significant celebrity appearances that revive well-known Marvel characters from the pre-MCU period, such as Jennifer Garner’s Elektra Natchios and Wesley Snipes’ Blade. In addition, Captain America franchise star Chris Evans played Johnny Storm/Human Torch, a character from The Fantastic Four who predated the MCU, while Channing Tatum made his MCU debut as Gambit. The Time Variance Authority (TVA) assigns the “Merc With a Mouth” and Logan a multiverse-saving mission, and Deadpool & Wolverine centers on their peculiar alliance. The team face up against Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova, the villainous sister of Charles Xavier/Professor X, who threatens to wipe away the holy timeline and, by implication, eliminate Wade Wilson’s family. In addition, Leslie Uggams plays Blind Al, Stefan Kapičić plays Colosseus, Matthew Macfadyen plays Mr. Paradox, Morena Baccarin plays Vanessa Carlysle, and Karan Soni plays Domino. The movie’s direction was altered by Jackman’s return from his Wolverine retirement, and the MCU owes him for making Deadpool & Wolverine feasible after early ideas for the third Deadpool film were turned down. Levy hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a Wolverine and Deadpool 2 sequel. In the meanwhile, Reynolds and Jackman, who have been connected to the impending Avengers sequels Doomsday and Secret Wars, may play their namesakes again in other MCU productions.
