Marvel’s Multiverse Saga has been a playground for introducing various character variants, and the recent Deadpool & Wolverine film took this to new heights. Ryan Reynolds not only reprised his role as the Deadpool from the Fox X-Men movies but also portrayed Nicepool, among other Deadpool variants like Dogpool, Ladypool, Kidpool, and Cowboypool. This summer blockbuster was a showcase of Deadpool’s multifaceted nature, but the MCU has just received another new Deadpool variant that could spell trouble for the entire multiverse.
This week, Marvel’s What If…? concluded its third and final season, with the series finale airing on Sunday, December 29th. In the final moments of the last episode, Uatu the Watcher introduced larger concepts from the Marvel multiverse that hadn’t been explored in the series. Among the heroes featured in this montage were unique characters like the six-armed Spider-Man, Ironheart as The Punisher, Kingo from Eternals as Iron Man, a Dinosaur Hawkeye, and notably, a new Deadpool variant. This Deadpool, though only briefly seen, is armed to the teeth, suggesting a variant based on the “Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe” comic series.
In the “Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe” comic, written by Cullen Bunn and illustrated by Dalibor Talajic, Deadpool goes on a rampage, killing iconic characters like the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Thanos, the Silver Surfer, and even The Watcher. The series is meta and self-referential, culminating in Deadpool killing the comic creators themselves. This new Deadpool variant, with his extensive arsenal, could be a harbinger of doom for the MCU, raising questions about his potential role in future films.
While it may seem far-fetched for this Deadpool variant to appear in the MCU, the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars offers a plausible opportunity. Ryan Reynolds has expressed interest in playing other Deadpool variants and has hinted that Deadpool should remain a supporting or ensemble player rather than joining The Avengers outright. With Avengers: Secret Wars potentially blending multiple continuities, it’s conceivable that Reynolds could return as a deadly Deadpool variant, adding a new layer of complexity to the MCU. As fans await the next appearance of Deadpool, the multiverse should indeed be on high alert.
