As its lead actress, Dakota Johnson bears the brunt of Madame Web’s critical and financial setbacks, but she can find some comfort in the mocked Sony Spider-Man Universe movie, which sets a new box office record for her. Madame Web reportedly got Johnson her largest domestic opening for a PG-13 film in her acting career when the SSU film earned $26.2 million in its first five days of release. Madame Web outperformed Need for Speed (2014), which brought in $17.9 million in North American theatres, and Beastly (2011), which brought in $9.85 million at home. Made on a budget far larger than the first projected $80 million, Madame Web fell short of Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love at the box office, partly because of the widespread refunding of tickets on opening night. Madame Web, which debuted on February 14 and has already earned slightly more than $51 million domestically, is expected to become the SSU’s most recent box office smash. Madame Web has also received an unprecedentedly poor critical rating of 13% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is bad news for both Marvel and the SSU.
Johnson co-stars with Celeste O’Connor, Sydney Sweeney, and Isabela Merced in Madame Web as the title paramedic-turned-hero. Johnson has made a point of stating that “drastic changes” were made to the screenplay during production, highlighting the differences between the final version of Madame Web and the one that was first sold to her. Due to its numerous deviations from the comic books and absence of Spider-Man references, the fourth episode of the SSU has drawn a lot of criticism. Johnson, however, recently acknowledged that she hasn’t seen Madame Web yet but that she could in the future, claiming that she chose not to view it as a kind of “self-care”. Johnson has already said that she was worried about both the end result and her performance in the superhero movie. Elizabeth Olsen, a Marvel actress, gave her preparation tips for the role, and this is her debut picture in the genre. In the days leading up to the film, she also made remarks criticising the situation in Hollywood.
