Director of Secret Invasion hints at a Nick Fury twist

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe miniseries takes shape, Secret Invasion appears to be revealing a turn centred on Nick Fury in a series that promises its share of shocks. Director of Secret Invasion Ali Selim teased a change in the story MCU fans can anticipate from Fury in the programme as he battles the menace of radicalised Skrulls attempting to take over Earth in a recent interview with SFX Magazine. Fans may trust Fury, according to Selim, but they need keep an eye out for an unnamed twist at some time. Despite the show’s twist, Nick Fury can always be trusted by the viewers. And you can always rely on Talos, his friend, he said.

The character development of Fury, who is portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson, the series’ protagonist and executive producer, is a major theme of Secret Invasion. The Disney+ series explores Fury’s struggles with the loss of several Avengers, as well as his age and existential questions. The programme also delves further into Fury’s personal life, revealing a more sensitive and reflective Fury than ever. “Sam Jackson would say we knew the working part of Nick Fury, but we never knew anything about his personal life,” the man claimed. “We were never aware of his demons. We were never aware of his family’s hidden secrets. Never was he weak or damaged in any manner.

Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), the leader of the radicalised Skrulls, leads the group of shape-shifting aliens to Earth after believing that Fury broke his promise to provide them with a new home, and Fury partners up with longtime buddy Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) to help defeat them. Along the journey, while Fury fights his own battles and attempts to stop the invasion, he also encounters Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), James “Rhodey” Rhodes/War Machine, and G’iah (Emilia Clarke). Jackson has already discussed how Fury revealed his advancing years in Secret Invasion and how he is coping with the toll that his work is having on him. Moreover, Jackson and other cast members have emphasised how anybody might be a Skrull in Secret Invasion, highlighting its emphasis on trust—or a lack thereof.

Secret Invasion is based on the crossover narrative of the same name that was published in a number of comic books and companion volumes in 2008. When creating Secret Invasion, Selim said he had been advised not to read the comics, but the director believed the series will capitalise on the chemistry between Fury and Talos while extending the MCU and advancing the storyline of characters who weren’t in the comics. The six episodes of the Kyle Bradstreet-created series were all directed by Selim. Secret Invasion has received a mixed bag of early reviews; its critical score on Rotten Tomatoes is 64%, the lowest of any Disney+ MCU miniseries to date. The usage of AI in the credits and the pace of the series have both drawn criticism. Jackson’s performance, however, has been criticised for lacking vigour. His toned-down delivery is more comprehensible, though, given that Fury in Secret Invasion is a darker version of himself than normal.
