Director of Secret Invasion talks about putting Nick Fury in The Marvels

Ali Selim, the director of Secret Invasion, recently discussed how the Disney+ miniseries places Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) for his upcoming feature film, The Marvels. In an interview, Selim talked about the steps taken to prepare for Fury’s comeback in The Marvels. He said that the discussions with The Marvels creative team were brief. The question is, “Where do you need [Fury]? You need him to be here. Great.’ Then we enter writing into it. Due to the fact that it is all beyond my pay grade, that type of stuff is really straightforward. The Marvels, which will debut on November 10, 2023, is a sequel to Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel, the latter of which also starred Fury.

Selim treated some of the character’s background in Secret Invasion in a similar manner to how he portrayed Fury’s path towards The Marvels. In a recent interview, the director confirmed this, pointing out that Samuel L. Jackson took inspiration from his own life experiences for a sequence in Secret Invasion Episode 2 called “Promises,” in which Fury recounts a childhood reminiscence with Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). It was missing from the page. Selim stated, “It was Jackson telling us a narrative. He has a strong bond with Nick Fury in a way that no writer could ever have.

However, Selim played a far more significant role in moulding other aspects of Fury’s past in Secret Invasion. Notably, he collaborated with the editors of the miniseries on the sequence in “Promises” that reveals Priscilla Fury, the spymaster’s hitherto unmentioned wife, to Marvel Cinematic Universe viewers. Fury’s wife’s Skrull heritage is established in this moment, although it’s not clear whether Nick is aware of this fact. “He is aware in the script. It was also intriguing because perhaps he was unaware when we took the photo. In the end, we altered it such that viewers were left wondering if the subject was aware of it or not, according to Selim.

Although Selim recently revealed he is familiar with the books, the Priscilla Fury twist from Secret Invasion Episode 2 is not included in the original comic book series of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu. The filmmaker said that Marvel Studios’ desire for him to avoid reading the Secret Invasion comics ran in the face of his decision to do so, but he prefers “to stay informed.”
