Disappointing Disney+ release update for Ant-Man 3: Quantumania

Spread MCU News

Disney+ has been a game-changer for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans who are always looking for ways to watch their favorite superhero movies at home. However, a recent update regarding the release of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania has left fans disappointed. The threequel will be available for digital purchase on April 18 and for Blu-ray on May 16, but there is no mention of a Disney+ release date.

This is the first time since the launch of Disney+ in 2019 that a Marvel Studios movie is being promoted with “ONLY on digital” verbiage that omits mention of the streamer. This marks a significant change in Disney’s strategy for home releases, especially considering that almost every Disney movie since the launch of Disney+ has had the service at the center of their home release announcements and marketing.

The omission of a Disney+ release date has left fans wondering if Disney is overhauling its home release strategy for Ant-Man 3. It is unclear why the streamer has been left out of the initial marketing for the movie, but one possibility could be that Disney is trying to maximize its profits from physical and digital sales before releasing the movie on Disney+.

It is worth noting that Avatar 2, another major Disney movie, also omitted a streaming date from its initial home release marketing, and its Disney+ release date has yet to be announced. This suggests that Disney may be eyeing a change in its current streaming release strategy.

While Ant-Man 3’s 60-day theatrical-to-digital release window is standard for recent MCU movies, it is possible that newly-returned Disney CEO Bob Iger may be trying to course-correct any damage done by his fired predecessor Bob Chapek. Chapek’s content strategy focused heavily on Disney+, going as far as to deprive most animated movies of a theatrical release in favor of a straight-to-streaming model.

Debuting movies for digital purchase and Disney+ streaming on the same day may have led to a hit on Disney’s premium video-on-demand (PVOD) sales, and Iger may be trying to rectify that by returning to having to wait for streaming releases.

It remains to be seen when Ant-Man 3 will be released on Disney+, but it is likely to be sometime after the Blu-ray release on May 16. Despite the disappointment for fans, it will be interesting to see if Disney’s new strategy pays off in terms of physical and digital sales.
