Captain Marvel 2, also known as The Marvels, is set to make history with its star-studded cast of lead actors. In previous MCU films, lead actors were typically either new characters or recognizable faces from other films. However, Phase 4 of the MCU changed this narrative by including characters that were only introduced in the Disney+ shows.
The Marvels marks the first time in MCU history that two of the top-billed lead actors, Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris, made their franchise debuts in a Marvel Disney+ series. Vellani portrays Kamala Khan and first appeared in the MCU in the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series in 2022, while Parris portrays Monica Rambeau and debuted in WandaVision in 2021. The full list of top-billed lead actors also includes Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Zawe Ashton, and Park Seo-joon.
While multiple other movies contained characters that were introduced in Disney+ shows, they just didn’t feature more than one in a top-billed role. The Disney+ shows will also have a major effect on the future of the MCU, with characters like Cosmo the Spacedog and Joaquin Torres making appearances in future films.
Marvel Studios has successfully incorporated Disney+ shows into the MCU, creating stories that weave together in a more intricate way. The events of the Disney+ shows have also laid the groundwork for most of the Phase 4 movies. The Marvels is set to hit theaters on November 10, and with the inclusion of two lead actors that were originally introduced in Disney+ shows, the streaming platform seems more important than ever. Perhaps in the coming years, fans could see a feature film in the MCU where all of the lead actors originally started in one of the television shows.
