Disney and Sony are going to work together after the two industry heavyweights reached a significant agreement. Disney is reportedly planning to assign Sony Pictures Entertainment the task of distributing its home entertainment content. As part of the new agreement, Sony will produce, market, and distribute DVDs, Blu-rays, and other physical media that are owned by Disney. Disney will continue to oversee the digital versions of its media, while Sony will only sell all of its new releases and catalogue titles on physical media through a variety of retailers in the US and Canada. Though the story notes that Disney is anticipated to perform an internal examination across all business activities that support physical entertainment throughout the transition to Sony, there is conjecture that the transfer might result in layoffs within the company. Disney reportedly stated that the Sony agreement was made to enable the business to more effectively meet customer demand by continuing to offer tangible copies of its films and television series. This comes after earlier rumours, which sparked a lot of backlash on social media, that Disney might stop selling tangible media. It is true, despite the outrage on the internet, that physical media sales have decreased recently while streaming viewing has only increased. According to reports, there was a 28% decrease in tangible media sales in the United States during the first half of 2023 when compared to the same period in 2022.

Other large firms have also changed their strategy as a result of decreased sales of tangible media. Early in 2024, Best Buy announced that it will no longer be selling Blu-rays and DVDs in-store or online. Netflix likewise ended its DVD-by-mail service in 2023 after witnessing sharp declines in customer interest with each year that went by. There is still a demand for physical media despite the downturn, and some directors have lately urged moviegoers to embrace the format so they may always possess their own copies of the movies they love. At a 2023 Oppenheimer screening, Christopher Nolan stated, “The Dark Knight was one of the first films where we formatted it specially for Blu-ray release because it was a new form at the time.” “And in the case of Oppenheimer, we really tried to translate the sound and photography into the digital realm with a version you can purchase, own at home, and put on a shelf so no malicious streaming service can come take it from you. We put a lot of care and attention into the Blu-ray version.”
