Benedict Cumberbatch, a Hollywood legend and the actor of Doctor Strange, has announced that the production on his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe would begin in 2024. In 2024, Cumberbatch said he will reprise his role as Doctor Stephen Strange to film sequences for “some Marvel capers in the making.” When asked if he would “love to do another one” for a Doctor Strange feature picture, Cumberbatch previously stated that he would. He added that there was still “so much more to explore” with the character and his tale in the MCU.

With his breakthrough performance as the lead investigator in the BBC series Sherlock in 2010, Cumberbatch, whose career began on theatre before moving into cinema and television, became a household figure. Before Cumberbatch made his debut as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2016 film of the same name, a number of other prominent roles followed his time as the contemporary reinterpretation of the legendary character. Cumberbatch has since played the character once more in Marvel’s What If?, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Ragnarok, and both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Cumberbatch conveyed the idea that he was taking a break from acting to his followers in May 2022. If the Multiverse existed, Cumberbatch was asked which version of reality he would choose to inhabit. He responded, “I think one that’s less busy, maybe… I could be taking a short break very soon, which is good. Just one month later, Cumberbatch said that he was open to reprising his role as Doctor Strange in the upcoming third installment of the series, assuaging the fears of those same fans that he would be leaving the MCU permanently.

It was revealed in May 2023 that Cumberbatch’s London residence had been the subject of a savage midday attack by a knife-wielding attacker named Chef Jame Bissell. After pleading guilty to criminal damage at Wood Green Crown Court on May 10, Bissell was later detained and eventually sentenced to a £250 fine and a three-year restraining order prohibiting him from contacting Cumberbatch, his family, or the neighbourhood where they live. Currently, Cumberbatch is scheduled to star in The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, an action-comedy, and The Book of Clarence, a parody of the Bible. Later this year, both films are scheduled to hit theatres. In addition to these roles, Cumberbatch will star in The End We Start From, a British film that follows an ecological calamity that floods London and forces the survivors to move north into uncharted territory.
