The Fall of X’s mystery surrounding what happened to the mutants who didn’t flee with Emma Frost after the attack on the Hellfire Gala is one of the most devastating parts for Marvel’s mutants. Charles Xavier was compelled by Orchis to utilise his talents to make the great majority of the 200,000 mutants on Krakoa travel through teleportation gates when the anti-mutant group Orchis assaulted the X-Men at their annual festival. Then they disappeared, leading Xavier to believe they had all passed away. The mutants who managed to defy Xavier’s attempts to force them through the gates—and who later managed to flee with Emma Frost’s assistance—are now known as the X-Men, and one of their new missions include discovering if any other mutants survived the recent “Mutant Massacre.” Shadowkat gets into Orchis headquarters and finds two important mutants aren’t truly dead, but one of them might WISH he was in this week’s X-Men (by writer Gerry Duggan, illustrator Phil Noto, and letterer Clayton Cowles).
When Shadowkat first learned that Juggernaut had survived the Orchis attack on the Hellfire Gala, she was horrified. Juggernaut had just been elected to the newly formed public-facing X-Men team (the real-life public was given the opportunity to vote on who would make up the new team, but the twist was that while Juggernaut won the fan vote, ALL the options were made members of the team) just in time for the majority of the new team to be killed by Nimrod, the potent mutant-hunting sentinel who is a part of Orchis. In their epic fight at the Gala, Juggernaut appeared to have been killed by Nimrod as well, but we now know that he survived and has been captured by Orchis. In addition to being imprisoned, he is also bound to another Orchis prisoner such that, should he escape, the other prisoner would be killed. Cyclops, the leader of the X-Men, who we presumably saw perish in the first glimpse at the Fall of X this year, in Marvel’s 2023 Free Comic Book Day Special, is the second prisoner in question. But this issue makes it plain that Cyclops not only survived, but that Orchis was also imprisoning him. In addition to having his eyelids sewn shut to prevent his force beams from escaping, Cyclops has also had his entire body booby trapped. This means that anybody attempting to save him would trigger bombs, killing both them and Cyclops. Shadowkat was forced to leave Cyclops with Orchis for the time being as the X-Men work to discover what other mutants have survived and how to release Cyclops. Juggernaut’s collar was at least unlocked by Shadowkat, preventing Cyclops’ death should he escape his prison.
