The most recent episode of Secret Invasion just made it official that in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is married. Nick Fury enters a home at the end of “Promises,” the second episode of the Disney+ limited series, where a female Skrull lives alone and changes into a middle-aged black lady upon hearing Fury approach the house. The former S.H.I.E.L.D. director puts on a wedding band when the woman asks if he is forgetting anything, hinting that the two are wed. The show then fades to the titles as they share a passionate kiss.
Charlayne Woodard, who is best known for her recurrent parts in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Chicago Hope, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Mayfair Witches, plays Priscilla, Fury’s wife, in “Promises,” a television series. In a chat with Steve Rogers in the 2014 movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Fury made the first reference to Priscilla. Fury used his wife to explain to Steve why he had to stay at his apartment so that Hydra, who had bugged the room, wouldn’t be suspicious of the visit. At the time, fans weren’t sure if Fury’s wife was genuine or not.
Since his first appearance in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #1 (1963), Nick Fury has been in a number of relationships with women in the pages of Marvel Comics. These include CIA spy Nia Jones, weapons smuggler Amber D’Alexis, and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis Dreyfus in the MCU). In the Ultimate Universe, he also had a former spouse named Monica Chang. There is no comic book equivalent for Nick Fury’s wife in the MCU because none of his romantic partners were named Priscilla or Skrull.
The film Secret Invasion is based on the well-known 2008 Marvel Comics storyline of the same name, which follows Nick Fury as he learns of a covert invasion of Earth by a radicalised Skrull faction — shape-shifting, green-skinned aliens that were first introduced to the MCU in 2019’s Captain Marvel. Gravik, the commander of the renegade Skrulls, is portrayed by Kingsley Ben-Adir. Don Cheadle plays Colonel James Rhodes in Secret Invasion, Ben Mendelsohn plays Talos, Emilia Clarke plays Talos’ daughter G’iah, and Olivia Colman plays MI6 agent Sonya Falsworth, among other actors who also feature in the film.
