Following her demise in a Secret Invasion, Marvel honors Maria Hill

After Maria Hill’s untimely passing during the Secret Invasion saga, Marvel pays homage to the beloved figure by recognising her contributions across the MCU. Hill’s contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which began with 2012’s The Avengers, were recently remembered in a post on the Marvel Studios UK & Ireland Instagram page. In one of the two images in the post, the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is shown lifting a glass at a table, with the message, “Here’s to you, Agent Hill.”

Played by renowned Canadian actor Cobie Smulders, Hill quickly established himself as a valuable part of the MCU, appearing in significant portions of the Avengers film series as well as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and a few Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episodes. Fans eagerly anticipated Hill’s role in the effort to stop the Skrull invasion of Earth with her longtime coworker Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) when Smulders was added to Secret Invasion in 2021. To the surprise of many fans, Maria’s time on Secret Invasion was brief. In the first episode, “Resurrection,” an approaching Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), disguised as Fury, shot and murdered Hill in the centre of Moscow’s Red Square. Hill’s MCU enchantment appeared to have come to an end at that point, shocking viewers in the process. Smulders stated that she was happy with the fan response to her departure, demonstrating how much MCU fans cared about her persona.

Along with Secret Invasion, Smulders recently appeared as a guest character in Moon Girl and the Devil Dinosaur, an animated series on the Disney Channel. She also said that she has been working on upcoming episodes. She told Entertainment Weekly back in July when asked about a potential future return for her character in the MCU: “I have no idea how or when she’s going to come back around to me, but I’m always welcoming the call.” One of the shocking turns in Secret Invasion, which was based on the same-named comic crossover event in 2008, was Hill’s demise. The Disney+ series garnered negative reviews from various critics, dropped to the lowest MCU rating ever on the streaming service, and its season finale received a dismal Rotten Tomatoes rating. On September 20, a making-of documentary tracing Secret Invasion’s production will be released.
