In bright MCU fan art, 20th Century Fox’s original X-Men actors wear comic-accurate outfits similar to their famous X-Men ’97 counterparts. Marvel Comics’ mutant superhero team made its live-action debut with 2000’s X-Men, however the popular squad has been animated since 1966’s The Marvel Super Heroes series. Despite producing 13 feature films in the X-Men franchise, Fox never properly provided the titular team with comic-accurate costumes, instead preferring black leather; however, other adaptations, including those in X-Men: The Animated Series and its 2024 revival, X-Men ’97, have excelled at delivering exciting X-Men costumes. New fan art provided by artoftimetravel portrays Fox’s main X-Men cast wearing the outfits from X-Men ’97. This includes Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, James Marsden’s Cyclops, Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, Halle Berry’s Storm, Anna Paquin’s Rogue, and Channing Tatum’s Gambit, albeit the latter never made an appearance in Fox’s X-Men franchise.
The artwork depicts what comic-accurate clothing may look like in the MCU, as Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine wears a version of his superhero suit that will appear in Marvel Studios’ forthcoming Deadpool & Wolverine. This tendency may continue with the MCU’s formal X-Men launch.
In 2019, Disney bought the film rights to the X-Men and other 20th Century Fox properties, sparking talk of a possible return of Fox’s original X-Men squad to the MCU. Ryan Reynolds was promptly confirmed to return as Wade Wilson’s Deadpool, while Hugh Jackman was announced to join him in Deadpool & Wolverine. Other X-Men characters have been reported to return, including Aaron Stanford’s Pyro. Patrick Stewart and Kelsey Grammer have already made cameo cameos as alternative versions of their X-Men heroes, but the complete squad has yet to be seen together. Deadpool and Wolverine from Phase 5 might change this, as the titular characters are slated to spend time in Fox’s X-Men Universe before traveling to the Void at the end of time and eventually to the MCU. Patrick Stewart has teased his comeback, so the rest of the team may follow suit. If not Deadpool and Wolverine, 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars is believed to feature former heroes from numerous Marvel series, including Fox’s X-Men. It would be fantastic to say farewell to this classic squad before Marvel Studios reimagines them for the MCU.
