Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is one of the most highly anticipated movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This time around, the focus is on Rocket Raccoon, the brash space pirate who has become a fan favorite over the past decade. Fans have long wanted to know more about Rocket’s origins, and now they will finally get their wish. Director James Gunn has revealed that the story of Rocket in Vol. 3 is so powerful that he nearly told it as a spinoff film.
Gunn recently spoke to io9 about his plans for Vol. 3 and revealed that he initially considered making it a Rocket and Groot spinoff. “I always thought it was a third movie thing because I thought we had to tell Peter Quill’s story first and then get into Rocket’s story,” he said. “I think the only question was, was it going to be a Rocket and Groot movie or was it going to be Guardians 2-because initially, I was going to do it as Rocket and Groot.”
This isn’t the first time that a Rocket and Groot spinoff has been discussed. Vin Diesel, who voices Groot, previously revealed that it’s something he and Gunn talked about. “It’s something that James Gunn has talked about, and something that I know he’d love to do,” Diesel told MTV in 2020. “Sure, I think it could be very interesting.”
