Spider-Man fans were ecstatic when Sony Pictures announced that the upcoming animated movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, will feature a plethora of new and returning web-heads. However, the latest trailer has taken the hype to a whole new level with its reference to the live-action portrayals of Spider-Man by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland.

The two-minute international trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opens with snippets of footage from the live-action portrayals of Spider-Man, starting with Maguire’s Peter Parker from Spider-Man 2. This nostalgic start to the trailer quickly followed with Garfield’s Spider-Man reflecting on the enemies he makes as New York’s friendly neighborhood hero. Lastly, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man can be heard saying that it’s his time to prove himself, a line taken from the 2017 film Spider-Man: Homecoming.

These references have sparked excitement and speculation among fans as to whether the trio of live-action Spider-Men will be making an appearance in the upcoming sequel. However, while it would be thrilling to see them on screen again, it may be too soon to have a full cameo in this animated film. It would be more appropriate for them to appear in the third film of the franchise, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which would be the capper to the trilogy.

Chris Miller, producer of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, previously confirmed an early plan to include cameos from Holland, Garfield, and Maguire in an “ambitious tag” from the first movie, but it did not happen. It’s possible that the trio could still appear in Across the Spider-Verse, but it could be in a post-credits scene to set up the events of Beyond the Spider-Verse. Doing this would allow Miller to fulfill his initial plan to bring back the main trio of web-slingers while also teasing what’s next for the Spider-Verse franchise.

Moreover, the trailer also hinted at the MCU’s connection to the Spider-Verse movies. At the 0:57 mark of the trailer, Miles Morales asks Miguel O’Hara (Spider-Man 2099) about potentially joining the “Spider-team.” However, O’Hara turns him down while referencing the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, acknowledging the existence of Doctor Strange and the “little nerd” on Earth-199999.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set to hit theaters on June 2, and fans cannot wait to see what the animated film has in store for them. With the possibility of the live-action Spider-Men making an appearance, it has only increased the anticipation for the sequel.
