The Secret Invasion series finale only implied that during the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016), James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle) was replaced by a Skrull doppelganger. Talos’ daughter G’iah (Emilia Clarke) frees the real Rhodey from stasis in the sixth and final episode of the Disney+ limited series. Unlike the other humans who were imprisoned and replaced by Skrulls, Rhodey is unable to walk after being freed from hibernation under New Skrullos, most likely owing to a spinal injury acquired during Civil War. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has claimed that Secret Invasion audiences will “understand exactly how long he’s been a Skrull.” If fans take the series finale at face value, Secret Invasion strongly suggests that Rhodey was replaced by a Skrull during Civil War and that the Rhodey seen in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a Skrull impostor.
Cheadle, who has played Rhodey/War Machine since Iron Man 2 (2010), first presented the role in Secret Invasion as if he were the actual Rhodes. He gradually changed his characterization in later episodes, prompting many fans to accurately predict that something was wrong with Rhodey. The fourth episode of Secret Invasion stated that a female Skrull called Raava was acting as Rhodes, something the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director later points out “nobody does.” Following the premiere of the fourth episode, Kevin Feige spoke with Marvel.com about the Rhodey twist. He went on to say that the Disney+ limited series “needed to have a character that one would not expect to be a Skrull” and that “Don was on board for this reveal of playing and revealing another side of Rhodey and revealing that, yeah, Rhodey has been a Skrull.” “When we have amazing actors like Don who have been with us for so many years, we very much treat them as partners in the creative collaboration,” he stated. We introduced this notion to Don really early on, and he was extremely excited about being able to explore with other parts of Rhodey that we hadn’t seen previously.”
