There are rumours that Ian McKellen will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars. McKellen will reportedly make a comeback in the next superhero crossover film that will serve as the conclusion of The Multiverse Saga, according to reliable leaker MyTimeToShineHello, possibly in the role of Magneto, the X-Men villain. In the X-Men film series from 20th Century Fox, the actor previously portrayed the renowned Marvel Comics villain. He did so in the films X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), The Wolverine (2013), and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). A few months ago, McKellen’s X-Men co-star Patrick Stewart (Professor Charles Xavier) made a hint that the two had regrouped for a top-secret Marvel project. Now, the Secret Wars rumour has surfaced. In February 2023, the actor said that McKellen had given him some input after seeing his cameo as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It really went pretty well, in fact. It’s true that he did remark something to the effect of “Hey, I would’ve done this!” Sir Ian and I, however, are not finished, Stewart remarked. “We’re… got plans.” Although their presence in Deadpool 3, another future film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is yet unknown, Magneto and Professor X are also rumoured to make an appearance.
Beginning with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective Spider-Mans in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel Studios has been gradually bringing back past non-MCU Marvel actors for significant parts in its films as it builds towards its next two-part Avengers crossover epic. Then, in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Anson Mount’s Black Bolt and Stewart’s Professor X from the short-lived ABC series Inhumans returned. The most rumoured cameos for Deadpool 3 are James Marsden as Cyclops, Famke Janssen as Jean Grey, Halle Berry as Storm, Dafne Keen as X23, Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth, and Halle Berry as Sabretooth. Ryan Reynolds’ titular Merc with a Mouth and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine are the only members of the X-Men ensemble that have been officially announced as of yet.
Avengers: Secret Wars doesn’t presently have a director, but Shawn Levy (Deadpool 3) and Sam Raimi (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) are apparently Marvel’s top choices for the position. While the latter hasn’t commented on the rumours, Levy told ET Canada at TIFF 2023, “I read that rumour, and that’s all I’m gonna say.” Secret Wars’s plot is kept under wraps. Originally assigned to pen the script for Avengers: Secret Wars, Michael Waldron is apparently no longer associated with the planned film as of August 2023. In the next film Secret Wars, whose release date is presently set for May 7, 2027, Jonathan Majors will return as Kang the Conqueror and all of his variations.
