It seemed inevitable that Chris Evans would return to the MCU for Avengers: Doomsday because to his post-endgame films.

After leaving the MCU in 2019, Chris Evans’ film career made it all but certain that he would return to Marvel Studios for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday in 2026. As an elderly Steve Rogers handing Sam Wilson the Captain America mantle and shield at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame five years ago, Chris Evans made what appeared to be his last appearance in the MCU. However, he was brought back into the MCU as Johnny Storm’s Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, and it has recently been confirmed that he will be making a comeback for the next Phase 6 crossover event, Avengers: Doomsday. Chris Evans will make a comeback to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday, according to a December 9 story from The Wrap, though the specifics of his participation have not yet been disclosed. Chris Evans may play Steve Rogers’ famous Captain America again, but there have also been rumors that he would play Johnny Storm, an evil HYDRA version of Cap, or an other character. After Avengers: Endgame, Evans’ career path was similar to that of the Russo brothers and Robert Downey Jr., who is reprising his role as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

Although it has primarily consisted of badly regarded box office disasters, Chris Evans’ film career since leaving the MCU in Avengers: Endgame has taken an odd and unforeseen path. Given that Chris Evans is one of the most well-known figures in Hollywood and that his eight-year tenure as Captain America made him a household brand, this is difficult to reconcile. Nevertheless, Evans’ only real hits after Endgame were the 2019 film Knives Out and the 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine, both of which had him in limited roles. After Endgame, Chris Evans’ only successful films were Deadpool & Wolverine, Knives Out, and Lightyear (2022), the latter of which was a box office failure due to the COVID-19 epidemic. On the other hand, The Gray Man had mixed reviews, while The Red Sea Diving Resort, Ghosted, Pain Hustlers, and the most recent Red One were all criticized by reviewers. It’s astonishing that Chris Evans’ post-Avengers: Endgame work has received such a poor response, but it could have brought him back into the fold at Marvel Studios.

One may argue that Chris Evans’ most well-received role after Avengers: Endgame was in Deadpool & Wolverine, despite Evans’ highly acclaimed portrayal as the antagonist in Rian Johnson’s 2019 murder mystery Knives Out. Several iconic Marvel characters were given the chance to make a comeback in the MCU Phase 5 sequel, which starred Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as returning mutant heroes. This includes Chris Evans as Johnny Storm’s Human Torch from 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four duology, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, and Wesley Snipes as Blade. Chris Evans’ return to the MCU as the Human Torch was well praised, despite the fact that he was only briefly seen in Deadpool & Wolverine before Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova stripped Johnny Storm of his skin. For many, witnessing Evans reprise his role as Johnny Storm seemed unattainable, but it was exciting to see him play again after a 17-year hiatus. Deadpool & Wolverine may have made Chris Evans’ most recent comeback confirmation inevitable, since this simply served to further demonstrate how well he performs in the MCU, apparently in any capacity that is assigned to him.

Chris Evans’s return to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday appears to be the most logical decision for the actor, who had few big blockbusters before entering the MCU as Captain America and has made fewer appearances in the years after leaving in 2019. Evans has been in some of the most popular and highest-grossing films ever made as Steve Rogers, but he didn’t really utilize this as leverage to improve his standing after leaving the MCU. After Avengers: Doomsday in 2026, he could now accomplish this. The Phase 6 crossover film is preparing to equal or surpass the popularity of Infinity War and Endgame, with the Russo brothers returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Robert Downey Jr. playing the film’s main antagonist, Doctor Doom. Evans will be in prestigious company as the casts of Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, together with Anthony Mackie, have confirmed their return for Doomsday. It is hoped that Evans’s Avengers: Doomsday comeback would mark the beginning of a new chapter in the actor’s career.
