James Gunn, co-founder of DC Studios and director of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, talks about the alleged decline of superhero films. In a recent episode of Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, Gunn shared his thoughts on why the superhero genre hasn’t been as successful in recent years, according to report. In response to the question of whether he believed there were now too many superhero films being produced, Gunn simply said, “Yeah, I do think there’s too many,” before adding, “I think that what’s happened is, people have gotten really lazy with their superhero stories.”
“They have reached the point where, ‘Oh, it’s a superhero, let’s make a movie about it,” continued Gunn. And they decide, “Oh, let’s make a sequel, since the first one did pretty well,” without considering what makes this narrative unique. What distinguishes this narrative from others? What is the central narrative of everything? Gunn has targeted “middle-of-the-road” superhero films and television programmes, criticising them for sharing a similar tone rather than delving into different genres via the prism of superhero stories. On November 3, 2022, Peter Safran and Gunn were named co-heads of DC Studios. Gunn has spoken out on the studio’s future goals for the DC Universe and his opinion of the business as a whole. Gunn responded to criticism he received online for teasing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by saying, “The last thing DC would want is someone who would spend the last 12 years of his life creating a series of films, and then turn his back on his last movie.”
Specifically asserting that there is “no way” the studio will incorporate artificial intelligence in its productions, Gunn has also been categorical about the technology and creativity that fans should anticipate from the DC Universe in the years to come. These remarks were made just a few days before fans of Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion criticised it on social media for using artificial intelligence in the opening credits sequence. Fans have been shocked by the idea that the decision was made out of any sort of artistic intentions rather than as a means of testing whether the technology could be used to potentially replace or reduce the studios’ reliance on actual artists, even though many have pointed to director Ali Selim’s defence of using AI in the opening sequence.
