Prior to its publication on November 1st, Marvel has released fresh photos from Jonathan Hickman and Stefano Caselli’s Ultimate Universe. Bryan Hitch, Hickman’s collaborator on the Ultimate Invasion series, created the cover art. The comic, an oversized one-shot, will lay the basis for a series of forthcoming Marvel publications set in the Ultimate Universe that will provide daring new interpretations of well-known Marvel characters. The new run will feature tales from Earth-6160, which Hickman’s Ultimate Invasion revealed to be a parallel universe created by the creator of Earth-1610 (where earlier tales in the Ultimate Universe have taken place) and comparable to Earth-616.The one-shot will also feature exclusive sneak peeks of forthcoming “Ultimate” storylines, such as Ultimate Spider-Man, which was revealed to be the first installment of the Ultimate Universe’s rebirth last month. At this year’s New York Comic Con, the “Marvel: Next Big Thing Panel” will also provide further details about the world.

Spider-Man, the X-Men, The Fantastic Four, and even the Ultimates—the universe’s equivalent of the Avengers—were given modern and contemporary makeovers in the Ultimate Universe, which debuted in 2000 as Ultimate Marvel. Hickman said to Marvel that the Ultimate Universe’s original appeal came from the fact that it was a reflection of the world outside your window at the time you were living in. What does it resemble in the society we currently inhabit? The plot has undergone four reboots since its debut in 2000, the most recent being Ultimate Universe #1. Ultimate Comics, a reboot of the world, debuted in 2009; Ultimate Comics: Reborn and Ultimate Marvel: NOW! followed in 2011 and 2014, respectively. Ultimate Universe will now reintroduce some of Marvel’s most cherished characters in the present day, nearly ten years after the imprint’s last run. Hickman observed, “It’s sort of amazing how much the world has evolved in that time since the Ultimate Universe began. It’s a pretty intriguing exercise to imagine what it would be like to see the creation of Super Heroes in a completely other planet.
