Jonathan Majors receives positive news following Marvel’s fire

Jonathan Majors hasn’t had a good week at all, but the troubled actor is about to receive some encouraging news. After accusations of domestic abuse surfaced in March, a jury finally convicted Majors guilty of second-degree harassment and third-degree reckless assault. On February 6, 2024, he will receive a formal punishment; he may receive a year in jail. Attorneys have reportedly commented, stating that it is highly unlikely Majors will spend any time in jail. They have also mentioned how text messages that are utilised as proof in the case might help Majors’ defence team on appeal. For Majors, who was dismissed by Marvel Studios for his part as Kang as a direct result of the guilty judgement, that could be the bright side. Attorney Cary London of Shulman & Hill stated, “Since this is the defendant’s first conviction, the judge will almost certainly give him three years of probation, anger management classes, and possibly some community service, even though he faces a year in jail.” Mr. Majors will not serve a prison sentence.

Additionally, London stated that a misdemeanour case in New York going to trial is “extremely rare”. Defendants typically accept plea agreements in order to avoid going to trial and running the danger of receiving a harsher sentence. Although the district attorney claims that no negotiations for a plea agreement were entered into the court file, it is unclear whether any were held in this particular case. Legal experts say that Majors’ notoriety was a major factor in this case’s trial, maybe because the actor wanted to publicly defend his name after the accusations in March had already severely damaged his career. “It’s unexpected that it went to trial, but it makes sense given his notoriety,” criminal defence attorney Mark Geragos of the Los Angeles legal practice Geragos & Geragos stated. “This is a case that, as is frequently the case, took on a life of its own and instead was resolved with little fanfare or consequence.”

London said that during the trial, Majors’ lawyer committed a critical error that permitted Molineaux evidence—that is, evidence of past offences for which there were no charges—to be presented to the jury. That was following a line of inquiry used by Majors’s legal representative when the actor’s accuser, Grace Jabbari, was cross-examined, which “lacked specificity.” In response, the prosecution presented text message records from an undisclosed September 2022 event in which Majors seemed to be trying to dissuade Jabbari from getting help for an unidentified head injury. “I worry that you are unaware of the potential consequences of visiting a hospital. Even if you lie and they suspect anything, they will interrogate you, and because I don’t think you really protect us, this might result in an inquiry,” a text message from Majors had said. Jabbari said, “Why would I tell them what really happened when it’s clear I want to be with you?” in response, saying she would tell the medics that she had “bumped” her head.

Until Majors’ counsel made a mistake, this evidence was not allowed to be introduced in the trial. Lawyers think Majors’ error will aid him in his appeal. As stated by former prosecutor and criminal defence lawyer Lance Fletcher, “Majors may argue that the jury should not have heard about them, especially since they were not specifically discussing the assault he was on trial for.” “Obviously, this kind of thing can sound very bad to a jury.” Majors may also benefit from the split verdict, which may be used by lawyers to claim that the case is highly complex because he was found guilty of reckless assault but not of deliberate attack. In any event, even if Majors’ tenure as Kang in the MCU seems to be coming to an end, the legal dispute may not be settled yet. There have been rumours that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty may be renaming itself after he was fired, which implies that Kang’s involvement in the MCU may be significantly reduced. Though Michael Waldron was recently hired on board to create a new script, maybe with the intention of replacing Kang as the villain, it is unclear what will happen with the movie. The movie will be released on May 1, 2026, in theatres.
