Josh Brolin, who starred in Deadpool 2, has talked about whether or not he would play Cable again in the next Deadpool & Wolverine movie. In an interview for Dune: Part Two, Brolin was asked if he has shot any scenes for Deadpool and Wolverine by Collider (via X). “No,” the actor said, expressing confusion about his lack of return for the threequel. “Is it because Ryan Reynolds finds me offensive? I’m not sure. I’m not sure,” he remarked. But as Collider’s Steve Weintraub was about to ask another question, Brolin looked into the camera and said the word “Maybe,” implying that he might really make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
In Deadpool 2, Brolin makes his first and thus far only appearance as the robotic soldier Cable, a time-traveler. Despite receiving good reviews from critics and fans alike for his performance, the actor wasn’t initially selected for the part. Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld confirmed a long-running rumour from before the 2018 film’s shooting started in December 2023 when he disclosed that Brad Pitt was originally supposed to portray Cable in Deadpool 2. This was before Josh Brolin was cast. As for the rumour that Pitt was Cable’s first pick, Liefeld added, “I know for 100% fact that was true.” “They conducted sneak peeks, and David Leitch, the director of Deadpool 2, had a really particular bond with Brad Pitt when it came to stunt work. People are unaware of how early on that was. They so took various different routes after realising they weren’t travelling in that way.” Before Brolin agreed to portray the X-Men character, Michael Shannon was also asked to play Cable.
After the box office success of Deadpool 2, 20th Century Fox started production on a third Deadpool picture as well as a spinoff X-Force movie. But once Disney purchased 20th Century in 2019, the X-Men picture rights returned to Marvel Studios, and both projects were shelved. Following that, a new teaser for Deadpool 3 was released, revealing that Loki’s Time Variance Authority will allow the Merc with a Mouth and his ensemble of characters to become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, who played Wade Wilson/Deadpool and Logan/Wolverine in the X-Men film series, respectively, return to their respective roles. Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapičić as Colossus, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, and Rob Delaney as Peter are among the other cast members who are returning from previous Deadpool movies. Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen are newcomers to the franchise.
