Karen Gillan, the actress who portrays Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), recently highlighted a new power upgrade for her character in the upcoming film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The film promises to bring developments for many of the fan-favorite characters, with Nebula’s upgraded arm being featured in various promotional materials.
Nebula’s bionic body parts are key components of her backstory, having been altered by her father, Thanos, every time she lost a fight to her sister, Gamora. The upgrades to her arm could symbolize an emotional shift away from the abuse in her past, representing a character evolution that Gillan herself has discussed. There are even rumors that the sisterly relationship between Nebula and Gamora, which led to the robotic replacements across Nebula’s body in the first place, might be a focus of the upcoming film.
Recently, it was revealed that Nebula’s already-upgraded arm is even more powerful than first thought, with its newly featured ability to turn into a blaster. New footage promoting the movie shows Nebula shooting a glowing, yellow-ish energy burst from a circular hole in her arm, now appearing like a powerful blaster weapon. Gillan retweeted a video of this blast, commenting “New arm who dis? #nebula.”
Nebula’s robotic body parts play a symbolic role in the hero’s backstory, representing the abuse she went through as the daughter of Thanos. Given the apparent focus on non-consensual body modification in the film, it makes sense to include a discussion of Nebula’s storied past and how it impacts who she is today.
