Kingsley Ben-Adir of Secret Invasion discusses the unexpected influences of Gravik

Gravik, a Skrull zealot, is motivated by a great deal of despair and rage in Secret Invasion. Kingsley Ben-Adir explained how he prepared to play the Marvel villain and the reasons behind Gravik’s radicalization in the present. Ben-Adir stated that “huge trauma, huge mistrust of leadership, feeling of repeatedly being let down by various figures of authority and leadership, seeing war — it’s the buildup of all of that.” Additionally, he hinted to a moment in the future in which Gravik tries to “explain some of those reasons for why he feels the way that he does, but it’s the misuse of power, the mistrust of leadership, the broken promises, and the feeling that he’s had enough. It truly became an easy concept to grasp my brain around when he decided that he had had enough of listening to folks who were full of sh*t.

Ben-Adir revealed that cult leaders and their interactions with followers were extensively studied in order to create Gravik’s mentality, adding that it “felt appropriate as the villain in this piece to explore the antisocial personality disorder side of things.” He merely exploits and manipulates others, and his justification for what he’s doing is a whole piece of sh*t. He continually puts everyone to the test, which is entertaining to play. Another significant influence was actor Harold Torres, who said of his character Manuel Quinteras in the crime thriller ZeroZeroZero that he “holds a certain tension and a certain mystery in his behaviour.” He takes advantage of and manipulates those around him.

Although not much is known about Gravik’s origins, the Secret Invasion premiere made it clear that he harbours resentment against Nick Fury for failing to find a new planet for Captain Marvel’s Skrull refugees. As a result, Gravik and his supporters, which include Talos’ daughter G’iah, established the Skrull-only enclave of New Skrullos while waging terrorist wars all across the world and kidnapping and replacing important people. Maria Hill, Fury, Talos, and Gravik attempt to stop one of Gravik’s bombings, but they finally fail, and Hill is killed by Gravik while he is posing as Fury.

Secret Invasion received mixed to excellent reviews when it was first published, but it has since drawn criticism for its AI-generated entrance scene. The intention of the opening titles, according to director Ali Selim, was to mimic the suspicious appearance of a “shape-shifting, Skrull world identity.” Its presence nonetheless prompts questions about whether AI art is a type of art theft. Additionally, Secret Invasion was given a parental advisory in certain Disney+ streaming countries, including the United Kingdom, owing to its mature subject matter.
