“Kraven the Hunter” has hit theaters, marking what could potentially be Sony’s final villain-led movie in a franchise that began with 2018’s “Venom.” Unlike its predecessors, “Kraven the Hunter” is treated as a standalone story, devoid of any connections to characters like Morbius or The Vulture. Despite this, the film sets up a potential sequel with its action-packed ending. In the final act, crimelord Aleksei Sytsevich and The Foreigner join forces to take down Kraven, abducting his beloved brother, Dmitri, and setting the stage for an intense showdown.
Kraven, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, manages to decimate Sytsevich’s henchmen but is momentarily incapacitated by The Foreigner’s hypnotic powers, which cause him to hallucinate being surrounded by spiders. However, Calypso saves the day by killing The Foreigner with a well-placed arrow to the head. As Kraven confronts Sytsevich, the gangster reveals that a New York doctor named Miles Warren, better known as The Jackal, has transformed him into the mutant Rhino-man. After a brutal battle, Kraven defeats Rhino and uncovers that his father, Nikolai, orchestrated the assassination attempt. In a dramatic confrontation, Kraven allows a bear to maul his father to death, implying that he can influence animals with his mind.
The film’s climax reveals that Dmitri has chosen to take over their father’s empire and become The Chameleon, thanks to Dr. Miles Warren’s assistance. This transformation allows Dmitri to impersonate anyone he desires, setting the stage for a sequel that would pit Kraven against his newly empowered brother. However, given the film’s reception and the current state of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, a follow-up is unlikely. The original plan seemed to involve Warren creating more animalistic foes for Kraven to face, potentially sparing audiences from seeing a mutant Scorpion or Doctor Octopus.
The movie concludes with Kraven donning his classic vest from the comics, ready to continue his vigilante mission by hunting down his brother, who has become the very type of criminal Kraven has spent the entire film eliminating. Despite the setup for a sequel, there is no indication that Kraven will face Spider-Man in future installments. It remains unclear how filmmaker J.C. Chandor envisioned this story leading to Kraven’s Last Hunt, but for now, “Kraven the Hunter” stands as a standalone entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, arriving in theaters on December 13.
