Mark Ruffalo revealed that the original plan for Hulk’s story in Avengers: Infinity War was to bring him back during the final battle. However, the scene was eventually scrapped during reshoots after the directors decided it didn’t work. Ruffalo shared more about what happened behind-the-scenes during his appearance at Emerald City Comic-Con.

There was a scene in Avengers: Infinity War set in Wakanda where Banner was expected to emerge from the Hulk buster suit and battle Cull Obsidian. Once he defeated the Black Order member, he was to come across Black Widow and Falcon. Natasha was supposed to try to calm him down so that he could return to his human form. However, all of this was abandoned, and the film decided not to bring back the Hulk for the rest of the story.

According to Mark Ruffalo, filming Avengers: Infinity War was a challenging and surprising experience. One of the surprises was that Hulk was originally planned to appear at the end, bursting out of the Hulkbuster suit. However, they shot the scene four times and it wasn’t working. The Russo brothers realized that Hulk couldn’t save the day again and decided to have Banner lose without him. They changed the script to have Banner try to make friends with Hulk instead.

Ruffalo also shared that they shot the scene multiple times over the course of a year and were always working on getting it right. Filming a Marvel movie is different from other films because they are always finding ways to interweave different storylines. Marvel wants to create the greatest impact for the audience.

Even while the concept of Hulk and Banner fighting was fantastic, Marvel Studios was only able to briefly touch upon it in Avengers: Infinity War. Banner was still in his human form when Avengers: Endgame began, and when Smart Hulk reappeared, the MCU failed to adequately depict how he was able to assume his binary form. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law eventually touched on it, but Marvel Studios should have spent more time detailing how it occurred.
