Speaking candidly, Loki executive producer Kevin Wright discussed the Balder the Brave Easter Egg that appeared in the most recent Disney+ episode. Balder the Brave was mentioned in the programme in 1893, but Wright clarified in an interview that this wasn’t because the figure nearly made an appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. No, Wright said, and if it had occurred in Multiverse of Madness, we probably wouldn’t have done it. The joke’s main appeal, in my opinion, is that it gives the impression that Balder has somewhat vanished from history. It seemed funny to pull off that joke and then place Loki up there, where he is the one being erased from the annals of Asgardian and Norse mythology. Therefore, in a manner, the Multiverse of Madness’s inability to pull it off opened the way for us to put up that little joke.” At the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Mobius (Owen Wilson) are looking for Ravonna Renslayer when they come upon a Norse pavilion with wood sculptures of Thor, Odin, and Balder. Since “no one’s even heard of him,” Loki queries why Balder was featured in the pavilion. Mobius responds, “Sure they have.” Balder, the Mighty. I forget sometimes that you are one of them, you know. Of them, you are one. Astounds me.”
Based on the Norse god Baldr, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created Balder the Brave, who made his debut in Journey into Mystery (1962) as Thor’s half-brother and the Warriors Three’s companion. Seldom seen in non-comic media, the character nearly made an appearance in Multiverse of Madness, where Daniel Craig, the actor who plays James Bond, would have portrayed him. But due to Craig’s withdrawal from the 2022 blockbuster sequel—apparently due to worries about the COVID-19 pandemic—Balder had to be reshot with John Krasinski’s Mister Fantastic taking Balder’s place. After the dramatic Season 1 ending, Loki finds himself engaged in a struggle for the Time Variance Authority’s soul in Loki Season 2. The official synopsis states that Loki searches for Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes, and the meaning of having free will and a glorious purpose while travelling through an ever-expanding and dangerous Multiverse with Mobius, Hunter B-15, and a group of new and returning characters.
