Magneto is making a timely comeback. Marvel revealed The Ressurection of Magneto, a new comic book project from X-Men Red writer Al Ewing and artist Luciano Vecchio, in a fresh teaser ahead of New York Comic Con (NYCC). The statement on X (Twitter) states, “Magneto returns for the X-Men’s darkest hour in ‘Resurrection of Magneto’!” The Marvel’s Next Big Thing panel at NYCC will spotlight a number of new series, including this one. Other forthcoming projects include Avengers: Twilight by writer Chip Zdarsky (Daredevil) and artist Daniel Acua (Black Panther), as well as Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Powers of X by writers Gerry Duggan (X-Men) and Kieron Gillen (Immortal X-Men), and artists Lucas Werneck (Immortal X-Men) and R.B. Silva (Captain America: Symbol of Truth).
In X-Men Red Judgement Day crossover event, Magneto lost his life. The Master of Magnetism was able to defeat the Eternal despite having Uranos rip out his heart, and shortly after, he passed away in Storm’s arms. Magneto, a member of the Great Ring of Arakko, made the deliberate decision to delete his Cerebro backup, which held the secret to the mutants’ Resurrection Protocols, making it impossible for The Five to revive him. While Magneto’s passing contributed to the mutants’ Judgement Day victory over the Eternals, the Great Ring and the Quiet Council have felt his absence as they struggle with the “Fall of X.” The Hellfire Gala on Earth turned revealed to be an Orchis trap, which resulted in many catastrophes, including the expulsion of practically all mutants from Krakoa and the apparent demise of Jean Grey and Iceman. The reappearance of Genesis has sparked a civil war among the Arakkii on Mars in the meanwhile. The five-issue limited series Magneto by J.M. DeMatteis and Todd Nauck features Magneto, who may not be present in the normal Marvel universe. The series, which is set while Magneto was in charge of the New Mutants, explores the villain’s dark background as he attempts to turn the corner on his path to heroism.
