The identity of Avenger Prime was one of the largest unsolved issues in the Avengers Assemble storyline. For the fight against Mephisto, his Council of Red incarnations, and the Multiversal Masters of Evil, this mysterious entity gathered a group of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes from all around the multiverse. In Avengers Assemble Alpha, the long-brewing conflict finally erupted before spreading to Jason Aaron’s Avengers and the companion book Avengers Forever. On the last page of Avengers Forever #13, we learned who Avenger Prime was. Theories about him varied from Tony Stark to Kang the Conqueror. It’s time to uncover his hidden past, now.
The following article includes Avengers #65 spoilers, so beware. You should read on your own risk.
Jason Aaron, Javier Garrón, David Curiel, and Cory Petit of VC contributed to Avengers #65. Avengers #65 begins by exposing the origin of Avenger Prime as Avengers Forever #13 revealed a Loki variation is Avenger Prime. This Loki succeeded Odin as King of Asgard after Odin was sold to the Frost Giants and overcame the loss of his brother, Thor. When Avenger Prime/Loki began to peep into other realms, he found that the Avengers often foil his counterparts’ plans. He returned to his reality with this information and began eliminating each member of the Avengers one at a time.
The absence of Earth’s protectors, however, made Avenger Prime’s world vulnerable to attacks by cosmic foes like Thanos, Galactus, Gorr the God Butcher, and others. His effort to commit suicide within the sun ends with him being transferred to the God Quarry after stretching his magic to its breaking point. The strongest Avengers in all of Infinity call Avengers Tower, which is located here, home. In order to face an army of Doctor Doom clones, Avenger Prime teleports in both the Avengers of today and a million years ago to complete his origin narrative.
In Avengers Assemble Omega #1 in 2023, Jason Aaron, who assumed control of the Avengers in 2018, will bring everything to a multiverse-shattering end. Mephisto’s Council of Red and the Multiversal Masters of Evil are now attempting to rule the multiverse in Aaron’s Avengers and Avengers Forever as part of the “Avengers Assemble” crossover. With Avengers Assemble Omega #1, the last chapter of the ten-part conflict, Aaron will be joined by a stellar cast that includes Javier Garron, Aaron Kuder, Jim Towe, Ivan Fiorelli, and others.
It’s absolutely time to pull everything together and wrap off some of the character arcs that I’ve been working on for years, said Aaron. We discussed how epic of a battle narrative this is. It features several different characters hitting each other as well as many different iterations of the Avengers from various points in time and space. Nevertheless, in the thick of it all, there are all the character developments, beats, and story arcs that have been a part of my run from Issue #1. To prevent losing all of it among all the fights and chaotic times is one of the objectives. At the conclusion of this, there are some major character beats that will occur. Many of these characters are ones that I’ve been working on for more than ten years, in one way or another. It certainly seem appropriate to conclude by wrapping everything up.
