Ever since its introduction at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios’ Blade revival has been mired in development hell. But according to fresh information from reliable source Daniel Richtman, the much awaited film is now on schedule to start filming soon. Michael Green penned the final Blade script, according to a message made by Richtman on his Patreon account (via X). In November 2023, it was previously stated that Green, whose screenwriting credentials include Logan, Blade Runner 2049, and Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot films, would be reworking the Blade script. Additionally, Richtman said that Mia Goth is still in talks to portray the primary antagonist in the film, which will no longer be a period piece and instead take place in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The fact that Marvel Studios intends to integrate Blade into a Midnight Sons production is arguably the most intriguing revelation from Richtman’s Patreon post. The Midnight Sons, sometimes known as the Midnight Suns, are a superhero team that debuted in 1992 with Marvel Comics and included characters from the supernatural such as Blade, Morbius, and Ghost Rider. Prior to this, Richtman had said that Marvel was slated to release a Midnight Sons picture in February 2024, helmed by composer-turned-director Michael Giacchino. The actor who plays Moon Knight, Oscar Isaac, stated earlier this year that he would love to see the character rejoin a team in a Midnight Sons project, even if nothing formal has been announced as of yet. Mahershala Ali, who had a voice appearance in the 2021 movie Eternals, is still scheduled to take the lead role in the next revival as of this writing. Since 2019, Blade has seen many setbacks. After Bassam Tariq resigned as director, the project’s October 2022 start date for filming was postponed. A month later, Yann Demange took his position. Following the Writers Guild of America strike, production was once again postponed from its original summer start date. Filming on Blade is now scheduled to start in the fall of 2024, according to a new listing in Production Weekly.
