Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is set to star in the upcoming Black Panther 3, but his role is yet unknown, leaving potential fans to speculate. One of the most popular movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was Black Panther (2018), but the Black Panther sub-franchise was permanently altered by the untimely death of Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed the title character in three more MCU films. Instead of recasting T’Challa, 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever disclosed that Shuri inherited the Black Panther mantle after his death in-universe. As of right moment, not much is known about Black Panther 3 in the MCU. Letitia Wright is expected to return to her role as Shuri, and the film is probably still in the early phases of development. Given his credentials, Denzel Washington’s announcement in November 2024 that he would be joining the cast of Black Panther 3 was an intriguing one for potential audiences. Naturally, there are a lot of hypotheses about which Black Panther character Washington may be portraying as a result of this statement.
In an interview with The Today Show, Denzel Washington disclosed that Ryan Coogler, the director and writer of 2018’s Black Panther and Wakanda Forever, was developing his part in the next Black Panther 3. Washington said:
“Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther.”
Washington’s remark suggests that Coogler is taking his next position very seriously, which naturally heightens the anticipation for the announcement. Though they also serve to heighten the curiosity about who the ideal Marvel casting might be, these potential plans to actively prepare a role for the actor—and thus craft the script with the intention of fully embracing bringing such a lauded and talented actor into the MCU timeline—tease promising things for both the third Black Panther film and Washington’s role within the franchise. Nate Moore, the producer of Black Panther 3, discussed the next movie and Denzel Washington’s hiring in an interview with Screen Rant in February 2025. Moore did not give away too much about the movie or Washington’s part, but he did provide some insight into the roles that Washington would portray in Black Panther 3. Moore said:
“If that manifests, which we’re gonna try, I think it will probably be somebody from canon. Who that is, is early days. We honestly haven’t had really substantive creative conversations with Ryan, mostly because he’s finishing his film Sinners, which is gonna come out this year and is gonna be great. So again it’s too early to say, but obviously if an actor of the caliber of Denzel Washington wants in, we’re gonna figure out a way to make that happen.”
Moore’s remarks indicate that Washington’s part appears to be up in the air, but he won’t be portraying an original character nonetheless. Denzel Washington’s character in Black Panther 3 will be a well-known figure from Marvel mythology, most likely drawn from the Black Panther comics.
